California/Import

Imports and automated edits should only be carried out by those with experience and understanding of the way the OpenStreetMap community creates maps, and only with careful planning and consultation with the local community.
See Import/Guidelines and Automated Edits code of conduct for more information. Imports/automated edits which do not follow these guidelines might be reverted!

Ongoing imports

• California Land Cover — Turning the state green.
• California Farms — Turning the state brown.
• National Hydrography Dataset — Part of the nationwide import for streams, rivers, and water.
• San Francisco Address Import — Project to make San Francisco routable.
• US Forest Service Data — Project to enter (and keep object-updatable) all National Forests and Wilderness boundaries in California.
• San Jose Sidewalk Import — Import of City of San Jose sidewalk data.
• California/Using CPAD data — Curation of CPAD data (CPAD 2019 was last used as of November 2020) with suggested tag migration protocol.

• Point Reyes Trail Map Import — User:Beej71 imported trails from national park data.
• San Diego — San Diego has public domain data available at www.sangis.org. User:Ageitgey imported several layers in 2009.
• California/CASIL — State Parks from CASIL
• California/MROSD — Open space preserves MROSD
• California/SCVWD — Watershed and most other water resources in most of Santa Clara county SCVWD

Broken imports

Missing info and cleanup required.

• County borders: Unknown source of questionable accuracy. Doesn't align with USGS topo and CASIL county borders.
• City border: Based on Tiger data. quality is bad and doesn't align with USGS topo and CASIL county borders.

Both imports happened before API v0.6 and contain ways with too many nodes. They can't be modified anymore and must be split in smaller ways first.

Links to several possible GIS data sources covering California. Please check copyright before using this data. Data created by the state is in public domain, but some data is from various sources.

• CalFire — Has a set of landcover layers that can be imported. The website says they may be distributed in any manner, but a credit must be given. See California Land Cover.
• TIGER — In addition to roads, Tiger also includes area polygons, water polygons and points of interest for each county.

• CASIL download portal — Collection of various data sets including county borders, state parks, opens space, TIGER road and trains, etc.
• atlas.ca.gov — Different portal with same data as CASIL.
• openspace.org — Bay area open space operated by openspace.org downloads contain boundaries, trails, parking lots, and more. MROSD has given explicit permission to upload open areas and trails. closed areas should be excluded.
• calands.org — A database of every single park at any level, city, county, state etc. in California. It also includes BLM, open space and more. The data is owned by Green Info, based out of San Francisco. Larry Orman larry@greeninfo.org is the contact person. He wants to meet with someone from OSM to discuss importing the data. We need to contact him to get permission to use the data and see what requirements there are. Update: Green Info is in the process to verify the license terms of OSM data. They are also interested in feedback, corrections and have started a project to add trails from OSM into their own database. Contact OSM user User:Srmixter or User:Apo42 if you are interested in this project.

• LA County Assessor Parcel Viewer — Scans of Los Angeles County assessor maps. Maps contain references to "MB nnnn ppp-ppp", which can then be used to get tract maps at LA County Land Records Tract Maps, or references to "PM nnn ppp-ppp", which can be used to get parcel maps at LA County Land Records Parcel Maps. Both are useful for correcting and adding missing street names, boundaries, etc. These are all scans, so import is unlikely, but they are a great official resource when dealing with conflicting information or new development areas. Tag with source_ref=ABKnnnn-sss;{TRtttt-ppp|PMmmm-ppp} and source=LACA;LACDPW to document (nnnn-sss is the Assessor's map book and sheet number, tttt-ppp is the tract map book and page number (MB) or mmm-ppp is the parcel map book and page number (PM)).
• LA County eGIS — Lots of LA County data such as plots, fire hydrants, addresses, building outlines, land use, and more.

Counties that have granted use of their shapefile GIS data and imports added. Add any imports completed and projects you are working on here. Also feel free to add other counties that specifically let their data be used.

• Fresno County Public site or https://transfer.co.fresno.ca.us/4360/Public, County has provided FTP login. Zoning, parcels, streets.
  • Note: the parcel data has exact data for each parcel, including the type i.e. residential, commercial and farm—even down to the type of crop grown. The shapefile breaks down into more than 100 OSM files. User:Srmixter.
