Directed Edits/Connectivity Mapping Nepal
This page describes the directed editing activities by Kathmandu Living Labs Consult under the OpenStreetMap Connectivity Mapping project created by the World Bank’s Poverty Global Practice.
Organizations
Kathmandu Living Labs Consult (KLLC), is a civic tech company that specializes in Open Mapping and creation of digital infrastructure that brings government, nonprofits and businesses together to leverage the latest technological tools to provide everyday citizens with better services. KLLC has been working to improve open data of Nepal through the integration and use of OpenStreetMap (OSM) in all its projects.
The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to countries of the world for capital projects. It has also been an integral/pioneering supporter in the creation of OSM community in Nepal and many other countries.
Goals
The goal of the project is to prepare critical geospatial datasets and explore their correlations with socioeconomic indicators in Nepal. As a first step missing roads will be identified and traced throughout Nepal. All data will also be arranged and shared through the Nepal GeoNode. For this project the following data will be generated and added to OSM
- Major roads
- Surface quality of roads
- Important paths
This is not an exhaustive list.
Scope of the Project
We intend to map missing roads, paths and transportation infrastructure in populated areas of Nepal identified by the World Bank. The World Bank team has prepared a spatial dataset of focus areas for mapping and grouped them by Provinces. The dataset covers approximately 2,490 square kilometers in the Terai, Hill and Mountainous regions of Nepal. All 7 provinces are included in this dataset.
Timeframe of this project
Directed editing portion of this project will be four weeks starting from 6th June 2018 - 4th July, 2018. After that KLL, KLLC and OSM Nepal Community will continue to work on integrating fractured road networks voluntarily.
Tools
Our team will use JOSM for editing. We will create a private task through OSM Nepal Tasking Manager (http://tasks.klldev.org/) to organize our work. We understand that fragmented road network data could result from this work so we will try and connect the paths/lines traced to a major road when possible.
Data
We use all free imagery available and will state the imagery being used in each changeset uploaded. Specific hashtag for this project are as follows:
#connectivitymapping #costtimeraster #NepalRoads
