Deutsch: Im vorderen Schild ist der Reichsadler ohne Zepter und Reichsapfel zu sehen; er symbolisiert die frührere Reichsunmittelbarkeit der Stadt. Im hinteren Schild steht das Richtschwert für die Stadtheiligen Cosmas und Damian, die mit diesem Zeremonialschwert hingerichtet worden sein sollen. Die Fürstenkrone bezieht sich auf das frühere Fürstentum Essen.
English: The arms were officially granted in 1887. The arms of Essen are unique, as they show two shields under a single crown. The eagle symbolises, that Essen was an imperial City. The sword stands for the patron saints Cosmas and Damian, who were executed by a sword. The crown is a symbol for the former principalty of Essen.
