Summary

The discipline of surveying, mapping and GIS is traditionally dominated by males. This male domination seems to continue in OSM as well. Nama Budhathoki’s doctoral work reports that female population constitutes less than 3% in OSM. [Source: Online[Available:25 August2014]: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Research] How to increase the number of female mappers and engage them in OSM remains a challenge.

In Nepal,Kathmandu Living Labs [1] organized ‘The First ever Girl’s Mapping Party’[2] in its capital city Kathmandu. About two dozen girls participated the Mapping Party. This picture is from the same Mapping Party and has become popular in Nepal’s mapping community.
