Humanitarian OSM Team/HOT Microgrants/Community Impact Microrants 2021
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is working to support local OpenStreetMap communities to expand their projects by providing Microgrants. These Microgrants are kindly supported by Facebook with match funding from Audacious. The Microgrant Program for will be available to 21 countries in East Africa and 25 countries in Asia/Pacific countries.
OSM Communities in these countries can apply for microgrants in order to:
- Help their mapping community around the world with the resources needed to grow their activities related to local humanitarian and/or development challenges
- Enable the development of leadership skills of local leaders and OSM Communities by providing support and mentorship
- Broaden the ways in which open mapping and data is contributing to disaster preparedness and alleviation programs across the world
The funds can be used to purchase devices, host events, and facilitate training to provide the tools and resources needed to complete their own mapping projects. Priority will be given to projects that are inclusive and diverse in approach and implementation, identify local partners and collaborators, include a gender strategy and have a vision for community growth.
Timeline
- Applications for the Community Impact Microgrants will open on Monday 07 December 2020
- Applications will be submitted using an online form/video pitch
- Applications for the Community Impact Microgrants will close on 31 January 2021
- Applications will be reviewed, triaged, shortlisted and selected by a team including members of the Facebook and HOT staff team and HOT Voting Members.
- Applicants will be notified on 01 February 2020

Who is eligible
- Open mapping-focused organizations and communities from the following countiries.

- Applicants do not need to be currently affiliated with HOT, but projects must contribute broadly to HOT’s mission of creating community-led open map data for humanitarian response, socio-economic development to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Organizations do not need to be legally registered; however, they will need a legally registered organization to receive funds on their behalf, and to sign an MOU with that organization.
All projects need to:
- Directly support, contribute, or respond to community challenges.
- Demonstrate they are working in collaboration with a local data user.
Who is not eligible:
- HOT staff members, voting members and board members are not eligible
- Multiple applications by the same individual or community
- Partners regularly contracted by HOT
- Preference is given to applicants who apply as a community, rather than applying as an individual
What costs are eligible?
This will be determined on a grant-by-grant basis. Costs can include, but are not limited to:
- Equipment and technical resources
- Operations costs such as internet connectivity
- Stipends for project participants e.g. a GIS Analyst
If funding permits, costs of pursuing legal registration may also be eligible, as well as volunteer mapathon organization costs for leaders in North America and Europe who organize significant remote mapping events. Priority will be given to legally registered organizations or leaders working in collaboration with a legally registered organization that can take on financial responsibility, although this is not required.

What do you need the grant money for?
You might want to scale your community efforts for on the ground mapping, or mapathons. The costs you might have for each of these would be different. For example:
- To scale mapping in your area you might need to pay for equipment like GPS devices and phones, and personal costs for your team like transport
- To scale mapathon parties you might need to pay for internet, printing, costs for your event, and equipment like laptops.
- Depending on the size of your community, you might also want to pay for additional things like training for your community leaders in leadership or management.
In your response we want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response in. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.
