Kansas county routes
This is a page to describe the state of the Kansas county rural system and roads in OSM.
Currently most county routes are untouched TIGER data. They are typically tagged as highway=residential and have tiger:name_base tags.
Problems with the existing TIGER data
- No surface attributes. The paved county roads are not identified.
How to map
The Kansas Department of Transportation has FC maps available online (they are public domain) which can be used as a reference. They can be found at http://ksdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=b90fa96277e148f9800fb1b6a2d584f1 The Quarter inch map PDFs seem to be more up-to-date than the FC maps (2018 vs 2013). The Half inch map PDFs are good for finding dirt roads, bridges, low_water_crossings and such. Urban FC maps link at https://www.ksdot.org/bureaus/burtransplan/maps/MapCountCities.asp
- Most county collectors will be tagged as highway=residential. In general this is should be changed to highway=tertiary.
- County border roads likely have different names in each county. Best practice?
- County borders can be tricky. If it is a simple case of abutting ways, just merge the nodes to form a routable junction. Things are often complicated by duplicate ways running along county borders. When just working on highway relations it is acceptable to tag the duplicate ways with FIXME tags, merge the nodes affecting the highway and move on. If you are feeling ambitious you can delete one of the duplicate ways and then make sure all the intersecting ways are joined to the remaining one.
The goal is to have routable ways.
