OSM Kerala was selected by Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) - Open Mapping Hub- Asia Pacific for a Booster Grant of 15,000 USD (+ GST).

Facilitating Team

The facilitating team will be responsible for selecting the projects from the nominations received. This facilitating team will be overlooking the completion of the projects and decides the quality of the work done and approve it. Members of the Facilitating team:

How the facilitating team was selected

The selection procedure for the facilitating team was started in the First OSM Kerala Community Meeting and the follow-up meetings held online. (Any objections on the selection of facilitating team can be added to the discussion page and will be answered there.)

* Jaisen Nedumpala

Jaisen is one of the senior mappers from the OSM Kerala Community. He played a pivotal role in the formation of OSM Kerala. Jaisen who works with the Kerala government always tries to implement and use open data at the government level and working towards the building of an open data policy at the government level. He was one of the pioneers in organising mapping parties in Kerala. He was the chief coordinator and architect of the Koorachundu Mapping Party (Edition 1 and 2 )

* Naveen Francis

Naveen played an essential role in building the OSM Kerala Community. During the 2018 Kerala floods, Naveen was at the forefront of leading the mapping community in Kerala for disaster management activities. Naveen leads the documentation for OSM Kerala and OSM India. He is also on the advisory committee regarding the standards and documentation in Kerala. Naveen is a member of the Local Chapters and Communities Working Group of the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

* Saritha K S

Saritha is a master trainer from Kerala and was part of many mapping parties. She trained over 100s of students on how to edit in OSM and follow the standards. She is one of the few women members of the leadership of OSM Kerala.

Legal Agency/Fund Receiver

OSM Kerala selected Geominds, a startup based in Kerala as the receiving/handling agency for the funds on behalf of OSM Kerala. Geominds was selected based on their prior expertise in executing projects in OpenStreetMap like Kochi Transport Mapping, Koorachundu Mapping, IIT Palakkad Mapping etc.

Nomination Procedure

Eligible projects will:

  • Should be Kerala focused for mapathons and others however the tools and algorithms can be generic
  • Focus on open mapping activities that are directly related to OpenStreetMap (OSM)
  • Projects that contribute to the creation of community-led open map data for humanitarian response, and socio-economic development
  • Foster conditions that encourage the recruitment, engagement and retention of OSM volunteers or community members
  • Not more than 8 months in length (also end date not more than Jan 15, 2023)
  • Request no more than 1,00,000 INR
  • Preferences for applicant from Kerala (for a team there should be at least 25% applicant should be from Kerala).
  • Be submitted on or before 23:30 Hrs(IST), 30 May 2023 for first window (projects in category 1-3). If budget allows there will be follow up windows for submission.
  • Category 4 and 5 are open throughout grant period. However around 15 days are required for the application processing and acceptance. Reimbursements for events already over before the final acceptance confirmation of application will not be entertained.
  • Results for first window will be announced on 10th June 2023.
  • Multiple projects can be submitted for category for same participants, however only one running project is allowed(timeline should not be overlapping).

The projects can be applied in the following categories

  1. Tutorials and Training materials : The applications from individuals or organizations interested in building tutorial and training materials for OpenStreetMap (OSM). It is intended for providing accessible and high-quality training resources is essential for the newer project's success. We are looking for applicants who have experience working with OSM and are passionate about promoting its use. The selected applicants will work as team or individual to create materials that will be used to teach others how to contribute to the project and use OSM data to create maps and perform spatial analysis. All the materials (text, audio, video and all other medias) prepared part of this should be in FOSS compatible licenses. Priority will be given to contents in Malayalam(or with Malayalam Subtitle)
  2. Standardization and Data Quality : When quantity of data increases, ensuring the quality and consistency of the OpenStreetMap data is critical for its usefulness. We are looking for projects which improves geospatial data management, data quality assessment, and standardization in OpenStreetMap. The selected applicants will work to develop and implement new data quality metrics, build automated quality assurance tools, and improve data standardization and consistency. The aim of the projects should be to improve the quality and reliability of OSM data. All the tools, data and documentations build as part of the projects should have FOSS compatible licenses.
  3. Use Case Building and Data Usability : We are looking for project ideas around OpenStreetMap data analysis, data visualization, and use case development. The selected applicants will work with to develop and showcase the potential of OSM data in various domains, including but not limited to urban planning, disaster management, public health, governance, environmental management and business. They will also develop tools and techniques to make OSM data more accessible and usable to a wider range of users. We encourage all interested parties to unlock the full potential of OSM data. The projects which should be replicable and use cases and visualisations generic. All the tools, data, algorithms and documentations build as part of the projects should have FOSS compatible licenses.
  4. Mapathons : Mapathons can be organised and conducted both offline and online. All the Mapathons should have the following
    1. A wiki page
    2. A project manager and funder manager
    3. At least one expert trainer
    4. A tasking manager project (HOT tasking manager, Teach OSM etc.)
    5. Hash Tag
    6. At least 10 volunteers Maximum of 25,000 INR is allotted for Offline Mapathons and 5000INR for Online Mapathons. All payment proofs and bills are to be submitted for claiming the amount. The bill amount is granted if the sum of all bills are lesser than the allotted grant. The grant amount can be used only for the following
    • Goodies for participants
    • Food and non alcoholic beverages(only for offline events)
    • Projectors and sound system(rent only)
    • Travel allowances (first class train ticket within India)
    • Remuneration for Trainer
    • Any other items should have prior acceptance from the facilitating committee.
  5. Travel Grants for Spatial Data/Open Data/OSM  related events : The Travel grant may include the following and is not based on window of application (always open)
    • Travel allowances (first class train ticket within India),
    • Event Tickets
    • Total grant per person is limited to not more than 15000INR(irrespective of number of events)
    • Accommodation charges
  6. OSM Kerala Annual Meetup : (TBD by community)
  7. Poster competition with OSM data - Kerala specific : (TBD by community)

Start your application

  • Visit OpenStreetMap Wiki and select “create account”. Follow the account set up prompts. Once complete, ensure you are logged in.
  • In the “start my application” box, type your project name and select “start my application”
  • This will take you to the application form template that you can begin to fill (you can select the icon for ‘visual editing’ if you prefer). Your application will be saved as a draft until you are ready to submit your application.
  • Once you are ready to submit your application (return to ‘source editing’) and change the ‘status’ to "proposed".

Once uploaded to OSM Wiki, you can share your application with community members to endorse, comment, and give feedback on your proposal. Applications will be shared and discussed widely during the application process.

Please note: We will take endorsements into consideration in the final review but credit will be given to the quality of the application as well as the endorsement (this is not a popularity contest). Endorsements will be checked by HOT’s community team prior to selection to ensure the integrity of the endorsement (ie. that applications are not only endorsed by members of the community that submitted the application)

Kerala HOTBoosterGrant2023 facilitating commitee, voting members and board members are welcome to endorse, and give feedback to all proposals. However, those who are taking part in the selection process will not be endorsing or giving feedback due to conflict of interest.
