The project aims to create and update the Major District Roads (MDRs) network of Kerala in OpenStreetMap. About 27,470 km of road network with 5784 number of stretches roads in Kerala is MDR roads. The project helps to build a freely available and editable map of major road network in Kerala by adding tag and other major details to OSM. Precise and up-to-date road information is crucial for effective emergency response and saving lives. This project will contribute to improving the accuracy and accessibility of road information in Kerala, benefiting both local communities and various stakeholders.
Describe the local challenge your project is addressing

The current state of road data in the region is inadequate with missing or incorrect road names, classifications and tags. This lack of accurate and comprehensive road information poses several challenges that leads to incorrect directions, longer travel times, and increased fuel consumption for commuters and tourists alike. It also leads to inefficient planning and allocation of resources. By addressing these challenges and updating the MDRs network in OpenStreetMap, our project aims to contribute to improved navigation, emergency response, infrastructure development, and socio-economic growth in Kerala.

Our project focuses on updating and enhancing the 27,470 km of MDR road network that consists of 5784 number of stretches roads of Kerala. The project activities include:
- Data Collection:- The data will be collected the government recourses which includes the tags for the MDR roads. Along with the local community members, will check the collected data and will clean it up. Will classify the road names, classifications, road Division and section details for mapping.
- Data Validation and OSM Editing:- The collected data will be thoroughly validated to ensure its accuracy and reliability. Workshops will be organized to engage the local community in the editing process. Mappers will receive training and technical support to effectively edit and update the road data in OSM.
- Quality Assurance: Rigorous quality assurance processes will be implemented to review and verify the updated MDR road data. Techniques like both automated validation tools and manual review techniques will be employed to identify and rectify any errors or inconsistencies while mapping process.
- Documentation of the data:- Throughout the project, comprehensive documentation and tutorials on mapping techniques and best practices will be created. This knowledge will be shared with the local community and uploaded to public platforms, enabling individuals and organizations to maintain and update the road network data in the future.
Describe your sustainability plan
In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. Our sustainability plan focuses on ensuring the long-term impact and maintenance of the updated Major District Roads (MDRs) network data in OpenStreetMap (OSM) for Kerala. We recognize the importance of ongoing community involvement that advancements to sustain the project's outcomes.
The key components of our sustainability plan include:
- Community Engagement: We will continue to foster a strong relationship with the local community and engage them in the maintenance and updating of the road network data in OSM. This will involve organizing regular mapping events, workshops, and training sessions to encourage community members to contribute their knowledge and expertise.
- Capacity Building: We will invest in capacity building initiatives to empower individuals and organizations to effectively contribute to OSM. This will include providing training resources, conducting educational programs, and facilitating knowledge-sharing platforms.
- Collaboration with Stakeholders: We will establish collaborations with government agencies, other non-profit organizations, and other relevant stakeholders involved in transportation planning and infrastructure development. This collaboration will also help in securing additional resources and support for the maintenance of the road network data.
- Documentation and Open Data Advocacy: We will document our project methodologies, lessons learned, and best practices, making them openly accessible to the public. This documentation will serve as a resource for future initiatives and contribute to the global knowledge base of open mapping practices. Additionally, we will advocate for the use of open data and the integration of OSM data into various applications and services.
What are your community-defined project goals, and how do you define project success?

To update and standardise the MDR roads in Kerala with the engagement of the community members.
The project goals are follows:
- We will train 5 number of new mappers for this mapping activity.
- Cleanup the existing data to match the with the updated data.
- The mapped data will available in the open platform will be useful for both local communities and various stakeholders.
Project success can be defined by:
- The successful updation of MDR road network data with the all relevant road attributes and features in OSM.
- The project's success is measured by its long-term sustainability. This includes the establishment of a data maintenance mechanism, capacity building initiatives, collaboration with local authorities, and getting support to ensure the continuous update and maintenance of the road network data in the future.

Partnerships
Successful applications will demonstrate one or more partnerships with a local data user. Priority will be given to applications for which the data has been requested by a partnering organisation, or where the partner organisation has expressed interest in collecting the data for a specific use or intervention. Example partners include local non-government organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), local governments, companies, universities, schools, and other academic institutions.
Describe who will use your data
It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by a partnering organisation, if there is an established formal relationship with the partnering organisation, if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation. If your organisation or community is going to be the data user, please describe how you will use the data, and how it ties in with your organisation's work. The data will be published in Openstreetmap and can be used by anyone who needs the road network data which includes the government officials, emergency response team, infrastructure development team.

Expansion
Successful applications will show how communities intend to grow community engagement. This includes a practical approach to how many new mappers you aim to recruit and how they will be involved in community activities. Priority will be given to communities that also include a plan for ongoing engagement beyond the grant period. If this is not relevant to your project, please explain why.
Project plan and budget
Priority will be given to applications that collaborate with other OSM communities in the region. This can be country-specific or regional and can include collaboration with Youth Mappers Chapters, or members of the HOT community to help with training, validation (as examples).
