Your project

This is an opportunity for you to tell us about your project. In this section we'd like to hear about your community, which local challenge your project addresses, what you plan to do and how, your sustainability plan, and how you plan to share your stories.

Describe the local challenge your project is addressing

In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

In the global scenario, the major challenges facing the cities is the space limitation, air pollution and heat islands. In Thrissur City of Kerala, the prime open public space is the Thekkinkadu Maidan and its surroundings. The vegetation in this maiden acts as the lungs of the city by absorbing air pollution providing ample fresh air and other ecosystem services. Now the growing Thrissur city faces air pollution due to increment in vehicles and heat islands due to concrete buildings as the major threats and the trees in the Thekkinkadu maidan as the solution. By mapping the trees and build-ups in the region, we can spatially utilize the open spaces for the public community and sustainable planting of tree species for better management of the city.

Describe your project

In this section, please provide specific details about your mapping objectives. This should include: how you will contribute to help solve the local challenge you are addressing, what you aim to achieve with funding, what volume of mapping you plan to complete and how, and the number individuals are you aiming to include in mapping activities. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Thrissur is the fourth largest city and the third largest urban agglomeration in Kerala. Thrissur is a revenue district of Kerala situated in the central part of that state, spanning an area of about 3,032 km2. Thrissur district was formed on July 1, 1949, with the headquarters at Thrissur city. The city has a hillock named Thekkinkadu maidan as its centre and located at 10.52˚N 76.21˚E and has an average elevation of 2.83 metres. This hillock which seats the Vadakkumnathan Temple, is oval shaped open ground in the centre of the Thrissur city which is under the custody of the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB). From the hillock, the geography of the city moves towards the Kole Wetlands. The Kole Wetlands act as a natural drainage for the city where the water is carried out to river and from there to the Laccadive Sea, thus keeping Thrissur city safe from flood waters which affect most of the other cities in Kerala. Different ponds, rivers and canals also keep the ground water safe from salt waters. Thrissur city has a tropical humid climate with an oppressive hot season and plentiful and seasonal rainfall. Annual rainfall is about 3000 mm. The hot season from March to May is followed by the South West Monsoon season from June to September. The period from December to February is the North East Monsoon season. The trees in the Thekkinkadu maidan act as a natural air purifier system and also provide many ecosystem services. However, there is no comprehensive assessment on the existing vegetation, its management and development has been conducted in Thrissur city. So, the work has designed to analyse the distribution of urban trees and their ecosystem services and map the data through open street mapping programme.

The objectives of the present proposal are:

1.     To document the tree diversity and ecosystem services of Thekkinkadu maidan, Thrissur city

2.     To map the distribution of trees and vegetation in the Thekkinkadu maidan, Thrissur city

3.     To map the built-up area of the thekkinkadu maidan and its surroundings by 3d modelling

4.     To propose management strategy for the shrinking vegetation in the Thekkinkadu maidan, Thrissur city

The methodology includes two components: 1. Urban Tree data collection and 2. GIS mapping and Analysis.

1.     Urban Tree data collection:  The data include Nomenclature, Taxonomy, GPS location, girth at breast height (GBH), Total height, Bole height, Carbon stock and Ecosystem services will be collected for each trees in the Thekkinkadu maidan.

2.     GIS mapping and Analysis through open source softwares like QGIS etc

Describe your sustainability plan

In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

The Mapping of Urban trees in the Thekkinkadu maidan project is designed sustainably. The satellite data collected from open sources such as Bing and Maxar etc will be cost effective. The ground data collection will be volunteered by public and student representatives form various institutions will be sustainable. The mapping of Urban trees in the Thekkinkadu maidan will be done by open source software and thus also sustainable. The trained personals after the mapping project will be able to conduct similar open street mapping programmes and sustainable for the community.

What are your community-defined project goals, and how do you define project success?

Please explain you project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new mappers", "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intent to be legally registered so that we can receive more grant funding in the future", "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women" or "we want to build a partnership with X so that our data will be used and trusted". We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

We will train 40 students / public participants for Urban tree mapping in the Thekkinkadu maidan, Thrissur. The data collected on the Trees can be used for the Planning department / Corporation for future development of the city. We also planned to submit the data to the GBIF portal for more accessibility to the public and collaborative actions. The project will be a success if the trained participants can independantly do similar work in other cites / institutions / places for the community. The trainaed personal can also undertake an elaborate extensive work in the entire Thrissur city comletely since or propoasl is limited to the Thekkinkadu maidan and its surroundings.

List the tools you intend to use during your project and why

  • KoboToolbox for Survey
  • JOSM and ID for OSM Editing
  • QGIS for Analysis

Explain how you plan to share your stories

Please give examples of how you will use share your stories with others. This can include: how you will publicise your news, where you will collect media content, how you will use social media channels, and if you will reach out beyond your immediate network to share your stories. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words. We will share our success story to the community through different activities like print media l;ike news papers and other weekleys and magazines and online medias like news portals, facebook, whatsapp, instagram, and twitter for promoting the project and spreading the story. Besides, we can create short videos / reels on the activities of the entire programme / part of programmes fotr social media uploades and youtube channels. Another important promotion is the developlemnt of video tutorials for the project work to replecte the project in the other cities.

Partnerships

Describe who will use your data

It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by a partnering organisation, if there is an established formal relationship with the partnering organisation, if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation.
