Kerala/Grants/HOTBoosterGrant2023/Proposal/Mapping the Road Network of Alagappanagar Panchayath
Your project
This is an opportunity for you to tell us about your project. In this section we'd like to hear about your community, which local challenge your project addresses, what you plan to do and how, your sustainability plan, and how you plan to share your stories.
The aim of this project is to conduct a comprehensive mapping and documentation of the road network in Alagappanagar Panchayath.
Describe the local challenge your project is addressing
In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
The current map is OSM have incomplete records, which hampers the efficient planning of road development projects, emergency response, and daily operations. The lack of accurate road network data poses challenges in transportation planning, optimizing routes, and enhancing connectivity within the panchayath and with neighboring areas. This can lead to delays in emergency services. Additionally, without accurate road network information, it becomes challenging for residents and visitors to navigate through the area effectively.
By addressing these challenges and mapping the road network of Alagappanagar Panchayath accurately, the project aims to provide a reliable and updated road map to aid in better infrastructure planning, emergency services, public transportation, and overall improvement in the quality of life for the residents.
Describe your project
In this section, please provide specific details about your mapping objectives. This should include: how you will contribute to help solve the local challenge you are addressing, what you aim to achieve with funding, what volume of mapping you plan to complete and how, and the number individuals are you aiming to include in mapping activities. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
The project aims to accurate and up-to-date information about the road network and adding road hierarchy in the Panchayath. The project involves systematic data collection, mapping, and analysis to provide a reliable and up-to-date representation of the road network infrastructure in the area. The project team will employ various data collection methods, including on-ground surveys, satellite imagery analysis, and existing records, to gather information about the roads in Alagappanagar Panchayath. In the initial phase a training workshop will be organized and will be trained by experience mappers from the OSM. Field surveys will involve physically visiting different wards in the panchayath, documenting the types of road, it's conditions, and other relevant attributes.
On the next phase the project team will proceed with the mapping process. This involves digitizing the collected data and creating a detailed road network map using GIS technology. The team will update the date to the maps accurately which represent the road network, including its spatial relationships, attributes, and connectivity. The team will ensure that the road network is classified based on road types and distinguish between paved and unpaved roads. The map will also incorporate important features such as intersections, bridges, and landmarks to provide a comprehensive representation of the area's road infrastructure.
Describe your sustainability plan
In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
- Data Maintenance and Updates: A crucial aspect of maintaining the accuracy and relevancy of the road network map is to establish a data maintenance and update mechanism. The project team will collaborate with local authorities to oversee the maintenance of the road network data in OSM. This includes updating the map with any changes or additions to the road infrastructure, such as new roads, road repairs, or closures. Regular data audits and validation exercises will be conducted to identify and rectify any inaccuracies or inconsistencies in the map.
- Capacity Building and Training: The project team will conduct training sessions and workshops for local authorities, and relevant stakeholders. Through training sessions and workshops, the project team will provide education on data management, GIS technology, and map updates.
What are your community-defined project goals, and how do you define project success?
Please explain you project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new mappers", "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intent to be legally registered so that we can receive more grant funding in the future", "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women" or "we want to build a partnership with X so that our data will be used and trusted". We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
Focusing on the above mentioned aim our community-defined project goals for Mapping the Road Network of Alagappanagar Panchayath are as follows:
- The primary goal is to create a detailed and reliable road network map of the Panchayath. This includes mapping all the roads within the jurisdiction, categorizing them by type, and capturing relevant attributes such as road conditions, connectivity, and important features like intersections and bridges.
- Better infrastructure planning within the panchayath. By providing an accurate road network map, local authorities can identify areas that require road development or maintenance, and make informed decisions regarding infrastructure improvements.
- Another goal is to enhance emergency response services in the Panchayath. With an up-to-date road network map, emergency service providers can efficiently navigate the area, identify the most accessible routes, and minimize response times during emergencies.
Project success can be defined by:
- The successful creation of an accurate and comprehensive road network map of the Panchayath, including all relevant road attributes and features.
- The successful integration of the road network map into the routine operations and decision-making processes of the Panchayath. This includes its utilization for infrastructure planning, emergency response.
- The project's success is measured by its long-term sustainability. This includes the establishment of a data maintenance mechanism, capacity building initiatives, collaboration with local authorities, and getting support to ensure the continuous update and maintenance of the road network map in the future.
List the tools you intend to use during your project and why
Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. For example: "we plan to use HOT's Tasking Manager to coordinate volunteers" or "we will upload our data to X platform because..." We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
- JOSM
- OSM Tracker
Please give examples of how you will use share your stories with others. This can include: how you will publicise your news, where you will collect media content, how you will use social media channels, and if you will reach out beyond your immediate network to share your stories. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words. Utilize popular social media platforms to share updates and engage with. Will post summaries and stories about the project. Publicize news and stories through various channels which includes creating press releases and distributing them to relevant media outlets.
Partnerships
Successful applications will demonstrate one or more partnerships with a local data user. Priority will be given to applications for which the data has been requested by a partnering organisation, or where the partner organisation has expressed interest in collecting the data for a specific use or intervention. Example partners include local non-government organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), local governments, companies, universities, schools, and other academic institutions.
Describe who will use your data
It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by a partnering organisation, if there is an established formal relationship with the partnering organisation, if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation. If your organisation or community is going to be the data user, please describe how you will use the data, and how it ties in with your organisation's work. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
The data will be published in Openstreetmap and can be used by anyone. This data will also be used by the Alagappanagar Panchayath.

Expansion
Successful applications will show how communities intend to grow community engagement. This includes a practical approach to how many new mappers you aim to recruit and how they will be involved in community activities. Priority will be given to communities that also include a plan for ongoing engagement beyond the grant period. If this is not relevant to your project, please explain why.
Even though the proposed project is mapping of the road network of the panchayat, we are planning to correct the ward level boundaries later on based on fund availability. This proposed project ensures the involvement of new mappers on OSM platform.
Project plan and budget
Priority will be given to applications that collaborate with other OSM communities in the region. This can be country-specific or regional and can include collaboration with Youth Mappers Chapters, or members of the HOT community to help with training, validation (as examples).
