Definition

Classification of (tourism=camp_site and tourism=caravan_site) by their type of operation.

History of this key

The proposal on which the original version of this page was based was rejected, with 7 votes for and 6 votes against. However, this page was created based on the text of the proposal, with the values "standard", "supplementary", and "non_designated"

Then, in June 2017, this page was significantly rewritten with different recommended tag values: established, informal and wildcamp

As of April 2019, camp_type is used 465 times, and the 3 most common values are "established" (220 uses), "informal" (124 uses) and "wildcamp" (77 uses)

A more frequently used tagging method to specify the type of tourism=camp_site is the approved key "camp_site=*" with values of basic/standard/serviced/deluxe. See Key:camp_site

Original Values (April 2015 to June 2017)

  1. Standard campgrounds (camp_type=standard) - any campground that is designated and advertised as a campground irrespective of the service level provided or the fee charged;
  2. Supplementary campgrounds (camp_type=supplementary) - businesses that provide sites for camping as an opportunistic activity for a fee. The campground supplementary to provision of hotel, hostel, motel, resort or chalet accommodation or running a bar;
  3. Non-designated camping (camp_type=non_designated) - locations that are not set up to offer camping, but are more suitable for camping than other places in the neighbourhood and therefore valuable to know. Informal campgrounds...

New Values (June 2017 to April 2019)

  1. Standard campgrounds (camp_type=established) - any campground that is designated and advertised as campground irrespective of the service level provided or the fee charged;
  2. Supplementary campgrounds (camp_type=informal) - types of informal campgrounds are:
    1. Businesses that provide sites for camping as an opportunistic activity for a fee."
    2. Locations that offer facilities needed by campers such as showers, restrooms and protection.
  3. Wildcamps (camp_type=wildcamp) - locations that are not set up to offer camping, but are more suitable for camping than other places in the neighbourhood and therefore valuable to know ...

Examples

Standard campground type: designated camper site in Oslo
Supplementary campground type: camping in front of a hotel in Uganda
Non-designated campground: public beach in Dubai near public toilets and showers
  1. "Established" or "standard" campgrounds include:
    1. Guarded and staffed commercial and park operated campgrounds providing amenities such as drinking water, toilets, showers, waste stations, laundry and/or dish washing, etc.
    2. Overnight (RV) sites: sites that charge no or a nominal fee, have some or no facilities, sometimes limited length of stay, self managed;
    3. Trekking campgrounds: often very inaccessible, no amenities;
  2. "Informal" or "Supplementary" campgrounds are supplementary to provision of hotel, hostel, motel, resort or chalet accommodation, running a bar or offering overnight parking. Other examples are fuel stations along highways and parking lots at touristic sites
  3. "Non-designated" or "wildcamp": - "locations that are not set up to offer camping, but are more suitable for camping than other places in the neighbourhood" - Note that mapping such features is controversial.

Tagging

  1. Applies the tag to a node or area that is also tagged tourism=camp_site or tourism=caravan_site
  2. In case of an supplementary camping the node or area of the sponsoring hotel/hostel/motel should also be mapped.
