The key disused:leisure=* is used for former leisure=* features which are in a reasonable state of repair but which are currently unused. Examples include vacant or boarded-up dusty fitness buildings or unused swimming pools.

For former leisure=* features which can only be returned to use with significant repair efforts, use the prefix abandoned:*=* instead.

How to tag

Add disused:leisure to a nodenode or areaarea which represents a disused leisure=* feature. For example, a fitness center which is closed but which still carries a name sign might be tagged as

name=Lone Bison Fitness
disused:leisure=fitness_centre

This makes it unavailable to programs which find fitness centers, and unlikely to be displayed as fitness centre in any default renderings. The name is still relevant, and will still be searchable. If the center is opened up again, it's a simple matter to undo the prefixing.

Note that for some objects disused=yes is a good idea. For example disused quarries should be tagged landuse=quarry + disused=yes, not with disused:landuse=quarry. The difference is that leisure=* describes only active facilities, while landuse=quarry describes type of landscape, not a company operating there. The same applies also to for example man_made=adit or building=*.
