International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) is a system developed by the United Nations for consistent coding of productive economic activities. ISIC codes are 4-digit numbers (with leading zeros), and can be aggregated to higher levels.
Use of an ISIC code can clarify other tagging, notably industry:type=*, or may provide additional information in cases where the existence of appropriate tags is not clear. ISIC codes will generally be used in conjunction with landuse=industrial, but given that it is a general classification of economic activity it can potentially be used with many other tags.
The main advantage of using an ISIC code is that one can make use of a pre-existing classification, rather than trying to decide on a novel tag value for industry:type=*. This is particularly valuable as the latter tag is still relatively poorly used. A secondary advantage are cases when the established tagging is either more general than ISIC, in which case it provides further detail, or when existing tags are too granular, in which case it assists analytical data consumers.
Examples
There are 5 remaining creameries manufacturing Stilton Cheese and I wanted to find suitable tagging to clearly identify them. Each has been mapped using landuse=industry. The ISIC code for "Manufacture of dairy products" is 1050 in class 105, division 10. Adding industry:isic_code=1050 provides a means of finding all dairies, creameries. In addition I then added industry:type=dairy.
