Proposal
Many significant trees are shaped by a certain pruning style. A solitary tree left unmanaged looks completely different from a city tree that is cut back every few years, or a tree that has been pollarded.
Since some trees have only historically been pruned, or need regular pruning, a pruning:last_date=* is proposed.
Rationale
Pruned trees are important landscape elements and can have a big cultural importance. Cities can be defined by their orderly plane trees, a countryside by their pollarded willows and old chapels by pollarded tilia or hornbeam. Fruit trees can be shaped into any number of forms, making for completely different looks of orchards.

Tagging
Multiple values may be possible. Extra values could be defined. For example, in cities, trees are often reduced to a basic structure and then left to regrow for a few years. I did not find a name for this technique.
Key | Value | Element | Description | Image | Count |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
pruning | no | a tree without any pruning, taking a shape purely defined by natural circumstances | |||
pruning | yes | some pruning is clear, but mapper is unsure which type exactly | |||
pruning | pollarding | a pruning system involving the removal of the upper branches of a tree, promotes a dense head of foliage and branches | |||
pruning | coppicing | similar to pruning, but the tree is cut almost to the ground | |||
pruning | topiary | artistic style, where plants are trained into decorative forms | |||
pruning | espalier | trees that have been pruned and trained into a vertical plane. Usually for fruit production or decorative reasons. | |||
pruning | User defined | other styles/forms used to shape trees | Commonly used values | ||
pruning:last_date | * | the last date this tree has been pruned. Syntax identical to start_date |
Applies to
It might be applied to similar landcover=* objects.
Vineyards and orchards are considered to be default pruning=yes, however a more detailed value could be added explicitly.
Any object that has an other value than no on this tag should be considered refitted=yes by default.
