The Arizona Transportation Information System is an internal index and nomenclature used by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to designate and organize state-owned, operated and/or designated highways. This internal designation type is not limited to Arizona State Routes, but also extends to U.S. Highways, Interstates, and Interstate Business Loops (which are recognized as State Route Business Loops). It is unknown exactly what year or decade ATIS has been in use, though surviving State Highway System Logs within the state archives show some form the ATIS system was in use by 1975. Other surviving SHS Logs show the modern ATIS system of designations and nomenclatures was in use by 1998.
More specific details about ATIS designations can be found on the AARoads Wiki article: List of state routes in Arizona.
