ref:gemeentecode=* is the 4-digit reference code, assigned by the Dutch government to each municipality (Dutch: gemeente) in the Netherlands.

The codes are assigned by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (Dutch: Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties) and Statistics Netherlands (Dutch: Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek). The Ministry maintains a list of codes here:

For statistical purposes, Statistics Netherlands has additionally assigned gemeentecodes to the Caribbean public bodies (Dutch: Caribische openbare lichamen), i.e. Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. This is because Caribbean public bodies are similar to municipalities, despite not actually being municipalities.

Be aware that the 4-digit code may start with leading zeros. Any leading zero is part of the code and therefore included in the tagging.

The codes are sometimes written with a prefix gm or GM, to clarify that the code is a gemeentecode. These prefixes are not included in the tagging. Data consumers can prepend prefixes themselves as needed.

Note that unlike real municipalities, Caribbean public bodies additionally have (distinct) reference codes within three other Dutch reference systems: see ref:caribischopenbaarlichaamcode=*, ref:eilandcode=*, and ref:landcode=*.
