Data Access - WMS Layers

--acrosscanadatrails 21:54, 29 March 2010 (UTC) The WMS Layers still need to be refined. But they do work. RECOMMENDED USE: It's best to use the following layers with the Natural Resources Canada (Toporama] WMS Layer

  • This is the WMS version of the CanVec data that will become available as .osm files. This is handy because in some cases, tracing the map features is just as easy. (Note: the overall accuracy of the data is similar to that of standard GPS tracks)

http://wms.ess-ws.nrcan.gc.ca/wms/toporama_en?LAYERS=limits,vegetation,builtup_areas,designated_areas,hydrography,hypsography,water_saturated_soils,landforms,constructions,water_features,road_network,railway,populated_places,structures,power_network,feature_names&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&STYLES=&EXCEPTIONS=application/vnd.ogc.se_inimage&FORMAT=image/png&

The base layer (less detail, but loads faster) data is available as a WMS Layer, the features on this layer can be used to get details about the water features as well as basic map features. Just copy the link directly be used in JOSM.

Data Conversion

The data is available in shp files which user:Acrosscanadatrails finds easy to use, & convert using the rules.txt format of the java script shp-to-osm.jar, and making a simple windows Dos-box batch file to run the conversion. If the data requires more complex conversion, a python script can be made to operate on a Linux system. At that time, another user will maintain the overall script conversion program.

Map Features

Similar to the CanVec Map Features, this dataset is very complex and contains alot of extra information which is not relevant to the OSM project. Therefore, a GoogleDocs Spreadsheet has been created, as is available in a linktoit webpage form. Anyone can gain editing access to the chart, all they need todo is just ask on the linktoit talk-ca list.

Because some of these [linktogoogledocsSpreadsheet 40 Datasets], are ALREADY included in the canvec-to-osm conversion script, much data does not need to be converted.

DIFF files

However, the data as available through the LIO Warehouse, ALSO makes what are known as "DIFF files" available, as a separate download. These are compiled data which shows the difference from the previous version (listing items to be removed & items to be added). Using an automated email, this data is compiled and emailed to the registered user user:Acrosscanadatrails on an "as-available" basis. (Usually, there would be a 1 day delay from the time the Contributor submitted changes to the LIO warehouse data, to the time the data is compiled, organized, slipt-up & made available to the general public)

Duplicates with CanVec data

Out of the 40 datasets that are available, there are certainly duplicate map features which would have already been either imported or ready to be processed from the canvec-to-osm conversion script. Considering that the data in the canvec set (most probably) came directly from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the original source data collectors could have also been the same people.

Therefore, after the initial CanVec Import is complete (estimated September 2010) decisions need to be made on how to use this data to greater enhance the OpenStreetMap project. As SOME of the data might not be appropriate for the OSM project, so it would be omitted (Ie. contour lines).

Currently, we know that the CanVec data is released on a 6-month interval (time-delay) for compiling the data into the CanVec dataset. However, we also know that there is ALSO a map contributor to be converting the data, making it available & checking to see how what data needs to be added to the OpenStreetMap project.

Therefore, the most reasonable conclusion would (most likely) be:

  • To include in the conversion script, only the data which would be either a) not available in the canvec or GeoBase datasets, and/or b) more geometrically accurate, and/or c) include more tag attributes which are of greater use to the OSM project.

Contact

Conversion Manager

User:Acrosscanadatrails has volunteered to be the one who sorts out the data available, and converts it into the easily readable GoogleDocs chart form, where it shows all the tags available, the definitions, and it's possible usage in the OSM Project. As well as cross-referencing what features are already available in CanVec Features, and the GeoBase features, as well as other datasets which are available. He is also in direct (phone & email) contact with the Land Information Ontario, so important messages can be cc'd to the talk-ca discussion list.

Script maintainer

The actual shp-to-osm (java) or shp2osm (python) script key/value pairs can be directly derived from the GoogleDocs chart.

The rules.txt files only needs to list the source/key/value pairs and no extra information is needed (unlike the canvec-to-osm rulesTXT files which currently contains this extra information, but are not read by the conversion program).

Therefore, user:Acrosscanadatrails does not need to be the script maintainer.

Discussion list

On the [linktoit Talk-ca discussion list]], debating the tag definitions & matching to appropriate OSM tags, is of greater importance than organizing & cross-referencing the source data. However as linktoit recommended communication with the discussion list on the process is essential in this pre-process.
