Augmented Reality browser mixes camera image with virtual reality

Layar [1] is an augmented reality application for Android and iPhone. It takes the image being captured by the camera and combines it with information from GPS, magnetic compass and tilt sensors to determine the exact orientation of the phone. It uses this information to overlay points of interest on top of the picture coming from the camera.

The application itself is free as in beer. There are many layers available with different types of content. Individual developers can choose whether a given layer is free to use or if a fee is charged to access it.

OSM Layers

This layer displays OSM objects tagged with amenity, historic, leisure, shop and tourism tags. The filter to only select one of the tag classes does not seem to work. (As of February 2011)

This layer features a 2D map basemap (mapnik tiles from osm.org) and claims to have 3D buildings in "most major cities"
