About your Mapping Community

The OpenStreetMap Sierra Leone is a registered community based organization in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It focuses on the creation and use of open data to manage and solve social, economic and community challenges. It aims to do so through collaboration with local and international organizations and sharing open data techniques. The organization currently consists of 25 active members with almost half of the sum being women. Since its establishment in 2017, the organization has helped in numerous mapping activities through its members.

What do you need the grant money for?

In order to make sure palliatives that are meant for disables get to reach them,we would do the following with the grant money

-Teach disables how to map their dwelling places; This would be done by introducing them to data collection tools like Kobo Toolbox and Mapillary. Webinars would be organized and Video tutorials would be shared.

- To provide internet and transport refunds for disables in order for them to take part in webinars and upload collected information

- Cover operational costs,( including online meetings, skills improvement) for our core members that would be validating the information collected and shared by disables then visualize the information using different tools such as uMaps and QGIS.

-Make the information accessible to government and institutions as this will make it easier to ear mark or know the locations of disables when aid items are to be distributed.

- To create awareness about the project on social media platforms and launch a website.

If you receive a grant, what do you aim to achieve?

We would aim achieve the following:

- Have an appreciable amount of disables who can map their dwelling spaces, basically introducing them to mapping and data collection.

- Map out all the locations of disables, especially those in mass dwellings, across the country. This would be done by disables themselves from where they live, thereby enhancing citizen GIS.

- Introduce them to the OpenStreetMap platform thereby expanding our community.

- Collaborate with the National Commission for Persons with Disability to monitor the distribution of aid items to disables across the country.

- Establish a robust relationship with disables for future mapping initiatives such as accessibility mapping projects.

Do you receive funding from any other sources at the moment?

If you receive funding from other organisations currently, please state how much this is, whether the donations are regular or one off, and how these funds have been raised. Please write no more than 300 words. If you have any sources of co-funding for this grant application, please provide details. Examples of this might be if you have any partners who would be willing to match grant funding if you receive it, or if your project has existing funding. Please provide as much detail as possible.

We are beneficiaries of HOT Micro grant which is geared towards the reviving and expansion of our OpenStreetMap community, specifically for Youth Mappers and staff of aid organizations.

The grant is $400 and it is being disbursed in tranches with half of the sum already received and the implementation is on going.

Is there anything you would like OSMF to support you with?

If there is anything which you would like OSMF to support you with in order to strengthen your project, please let us know. For example, this could include building relationships with OSM communities, sourcing updated imagery for mapping projects, or guidance on how to use some of the tools we have created. We want to do our best to support OSM communities, so please let us know what you need. Please write no more than 150 words.

Although members of our community have appreciable knowledge in open mapping skills we would like the OSMF to support us in the following ways.

- To share used cases of the uMap platform that are similar to our project.

- Guide us in creating a repository.
