Civic Foundation (Code for Nigeria) is a registered non-profit in Lagos Nigeria, and serves as the local arm of Code for Africa (CfA).
CfA is the continent’s largest federation of non-profit civic technology laboratories, which use open source hardware/software and open data to build digital democracy services and give citizens timely and unfettered access to actionable information, that empowers them to make informed decisions and that strengthens civic engagement for improved public governance and accountability.
CfA’s innovateAFRICA.fund incubates leading African initiatives, which include the use of drones for social good (africanDRONE). AfricanDRONE is the continent’s largest civic drone network, which just co-hosted the African Drone Forum, and helped kickstart the world acclaimed MapMakoko project (see CNN, Yahoo News, AFP) in 2019. We partnered with Makoko Dream, Uhuru Labs, and American Corner, to empower 32 drone pilots including 17 women and 15 men to capture 990 drone imageries and mapped 80 POIs covering health facilities, schools, water points and other public infrastructures.
Our mapping vision is to scale our existing efforts to other vulnerable communities, to curate baseline public infrastructure data that can be leveraged to positively drive economic activities, spring up new businesses, create jobs and for better planning.
What do you need the grant money for?
We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.
The following are the expected outcome and metrics of the project:
Drone equipment: Purchase one drone equipment and accessories for CfA’s mapping projects.
WanaData community in Delta state: Recruit and mentor at least 10 women data scientists, data journalists and drone mappers in Delta state. Organize an online launch of the community to highlight key partnership opportunities, and discuss the community’s vision, mission and expected programs.
Remote bootcamps for the WanaData community: Organize at least five remote drone mapping training and DataQuest mentoring for the community.
Webpage development: Create and design an interactive webpage for consolidation of the map data points collected from our mapping initiatives. This resource will be open source, accessible and usable by anyone.

CfN does not currently have any grants funding its activities, however, we have received in the past one-off funding for our initiatives.

Grant 1: Empowering 15 female journalists in the southern Nigeria - Benin city, to build their digital capacity for developmental investigative reporting via Code for Nigeria’s WanaData Program:

If there is anything which you would like OSMF to support you with in order to strengthen your project, please let us know.
