About your Mapping Community
Tell us a little bit about your mapping community at the moment, some examples of details to include are below, but please provide us with any information you think is relevant. Please write 100-200 words
We are Openstreetmap Mali. Like our whole country, our community is almost entirely based in Bamako.
We started in December 2014 and we are part of the most OpenStreetMap Communities in Africa and we have been closely working with the west African OSM Communities through the Projet Espace OPenStreetMap FRancophone. In the last three years, we have trained more than 300 people in OpenStreetMap in Mali and in West Africa.
Thanks to our involvement to spread OpenStreetMap, we have developed partnership with Government agencies, publics and private Enterprises and NGO, Universities and local leaders in Mali and trained their staffs in OSM and GIS tools.
We initiated some training and Mapping camps programs in August 2016 for Universities Students in Bamako and Ségou and set up a youthMappers at the University of Bamako.
We are today a reference in Mali in terms of Mapping and GIS.
Which locations is your mapping focussed
With most of the economic life, most of our community and the densest population cluster being Bamako, this is where most of our mapping has taken place. We have made special efforts in some remote areas but they are costly undertakings that have only been possible for special missions.
How long you and/or your organisation have been mapping
My Community and I have been mapping since December 2014. Some of us have since then taken our skills to other West African countries.
How many people are part of your mapping community
We are about 20 regularly active members and more than 100 members who occasionally participate.
The gender balance of your mapping community
Women are unfortunately underrepresented in all communities in Mali – including ours, but we have initiated « the Girls Initiative » with 11 other OSM Communities for engaging more women and Girls in OSM .
What the purpose of your mapping is (your mission)
Our Mapping mission is to make vulnerable communities on the map and to create and make Open geodata available for everyone in Mali.
What do you need the grant money for?
We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. We plan to rent temporary working space and also for organising some small events in Bamako and Segou Cities.

If you receive a grant, what do you aim to achieve?

How will the project help the community
This grant will lift major obstacle to a larger contributor participation in under-mapped places :
- Some hardware, namely two GoPro-style cameras, to gather street-level imagery – thus leveraging local presence by engaging remote mappers.
- A safe working space, where local contributors find electricity, peace of mind for storage of computer hardware and a clean work environment.
- Internet access, the single most important obstacle to the participation of contributors in Mali : to most of them, it is simply unaffordable.
The area you plan to map
We are planning to complete the mapping of Segou City, the third largest city in Mali and a major transport node in Mali. We believe that this effort will kickstart a local community capable of autonomous action after the project.

We expect to map 37 km² and to train 50 new OSM Contributors
How many members of your existing community you plan to train
Training session for reinforcing community members will be held for 30 members in the program.
How many new members you hope to join your community
We will train on mapping and data collection tools 50 new contributors and engage them in our Community. If five of them (10%) become regular contributors and form the cadre of an active autonomous community in Ségou, we will consider the project a success.

I have known Nathalie Sidibé since 2016 and witnessed her constant community building efforts, through which she built recognized leadership in pulling Openstreetmap forwards in Mali. With a small but solid cadre in Bamako, some of which I met, the Openstreetmap Mali crew is ripe for expanding its outreach to other cities of Mali. Without the slightest doubt, we can trust that Nathalie will ensure that this grant will go towards its stated purpose. Internet access and a safe space to work may seem given to us in Europe, but in Mali - and especially outside of the capital, they are often out of reach, yet they are foundational to any progress in Openstreetmap. I have known Nathalie since late 2014 during a training mission which helped starting the OSM coommunity in Mali, then I met every year during train the trainers camps in Western Africa or SotM. I totally second what liotier wrote above. I would add that organizing training is key in Africa to increase the number of active contributors as people there are not used to discover OSM by themselves, one of the reasons being the Internet access, shamefully more expensive in Africa than in Western countries with much less liability (and Mali is one of the worst case regarding this). OSM Mali can access some room space from time to time from local supporters, but having a dedicated space would allow the community to organize much more training sessions. Severin (talk)
Nathalie is a recognized leader, not just in Mali or West Africa, but in the broader OpenStreetMap communities. Having had the pleasure of working directly with OSM Mali on a photogrammetry workshop in the Fall, I can attest to both the vitality of the community and the physical needs. I have supported OSM Mali during their map2020 project. OSM Mali has worked on mapping public transportation infrastructure in Bamako. As OSM Mali team, they attended street-level imagery and map editing webinar. Nathalie Sidibé is a leading person of OSM Mali and she has great impact and influence in Mali and also in Western African countries. Nathalie had a key role to complete and coordinate OSM Mali team. As it is indicated in above microgrant proposal, limited internet access and lack of having hardware are constraints to expand mapping effort among OSM community in Mali. Providing these microgrant to OSM Mali would bring opportunities to have better OpenStreetMap in Mali. ( [Said Turksever, Mapillary)

I met Nathalie Sidibé in Bouaké (Ivory Coast) in October 2016, together with two other active members of the OSM Mali community (Soulo Boureima and Doubassin Dao). I've visited Mali last summer 2019, and shared training activities with the local community for like 2 weeks in Bamako. The Mali OSM community is a truly active and thriving community, that need only resources for their activities, like good internet connection, cameras and a place to gather. I can assure the OSMF that all the microgrant will be very efficiently used to make the community grow and expand. So I happily endorse this microgrant proposal.edvac (talk)
