maxwidth:physical=* expresses a physical width limit for using the way or passing the barrier to which the tag is added. If no unit is included, the value is assumed to be in metres.

This tag is not new anymore, but there is some possibility that it is not supported by rendering or routing software.

  • maxwidth=* tags the legal restriction as indicated on signage. maxwidth=* and maxwidth:physical=* can be used on the same way; the latter usually having a larger value.
  • width=* tags the actual width of the way's surface.
  • opening=*, spacing=* and overlap=* for more detailed information on entrances, cycle barriers and the like.
    • open=* is handy to specify that a barrier (like barrier=gate or indoor=door) is always open to some extent, where opening=* is used to record the maximum width something can be to fit through the opening, whereas maxwidth:physical=* is used to record the maximum width something can be when the barrier is open fully.
