National Backbone Corridors
One of the most important components of the basic national network is the group of 15 backbone corridors with a total length of 19,245 kilometers* that represent about 62% of that network. The 15 corridors are integrated by highways that communicate the main industrial and agricultural production zones as well as the most important urban and touristic centers of the national territory.
Each of them is named according to its ending points and some include branches of great importance that as a whole guarantee the coverage of most of the national territory. The importance of each corridor is based on several indicators (twenty) of operation and competitiveness, which cover aspects related with the geometric characteristics of each branch, the intensity of use in function of its annual average daily transit (TPDA), the coverage, the state of conservation and safety among others. These arterial highways are the most important communication routes of the country considering they serve the links over which most goods and persons are transported.
