OpenRailwayMap/Tagging Trams in Germany
This page is a guide on how to tag signals of legal tramways in Germany as defined by BOStrab. This include actual tramways, light rail networks and subways. For normal and narrow gauge railways as defined by EBO resp. ESBO, please refer to OpenRailwayMap/Tagging in Germany instead.
Preamble
Although the BOStrab defines various signals which are more or less universally used, each operator can also use its own signals in addition to those as defined by BOStrab. Standard signals are prefixed with DE-BOStrab: but in order to differentiate local systems, the country prefix DE- and an abbreviation of the operator is used instead. For example, for Stuttgart it's DE-SBB:, for Hamburg it's it's DE-HHA: and for Hannover it's DE-UESTRA:.
BOStrab
Main signals (Hauptsignal, H)
H 0 | A red light | Stop | |
H 1 | A green light | Go | |
H 2 | A green light over a yellow light | Go with limited speed |
It's important to know that main signals can also be used as distant signals. If they're purely used main signals, one use railway:signal:main:*, otherwise if it also serves as a distant signal, use railway:signal:combined:*.
For example, Go with limited speed can mean on some systems, that the next signal shows stop which makes it a main signal with characteristics of distant signals.
Main signal without characteristics of a distant signal
This section does not apply to Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Hamburg und Hannover which use a different signalling instead.
- railway:signal:main=DE-BOStrab:h
- railway:signal:main:form=light
- railway:signal:main:states=DE-BOStrab:h0;DE-BOStrab:h1;DE-BOStrab:h2 Value only contains states which the signal can show.

Those signals can also appear as signs and not as traffic signals. Those signs are tagged with railway:signal:main:form=sign instead.
Signals which permit signal priority are often depicted as a glowing A and are tagged as railway:signal:main:PT_priority=requested;off.
