OpenStreetMap Carto/Controversial decisions
This page contains the advice or opinions of one or more OpenStreetMap contributors. This page is not documentation, nor is it one of OpenStreetMap's policies or good practices, and it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some articles represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints.
Some decisions by the maintainers appear controversial or lack support by the community. These cases are documented on this page.
If you are not sure or if you doubt that any of these entries is controversial, discuss it on the Tagging mailing list or the Talk page. It is controversial if many people disagree with the decision of the maintainers of Osm-carto and can provide valid arguments against the maintainers' decision.

Area hedges not rendered
The rendering for barrier=hedge mapped as areas was changed in v4.25.0 (released in February 2020), so that hedges mapped as areas no longer rendered with a solid green color, but instead with a green outline. In the following thread on the tagging mailing list some mappers criticised the change in rendering a tagging scheme documented in the wiki.
