This is a project working towards mapping Scotland's boundaries prior to the most recent local government reform: old counties, parishes, burghs, even medieval historical units where possible.
Currently I am focusing on Angus, Kincardineshire and Aberdeen city and I hope other people will be able to take up areas of the country that they have an interest in.
I have proposed a system of administrative levels for each period of local government:
4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
pre-14th century | Other kingdoms under Scottish control, e.g. Strathclyde | Mormaerdoms | Thanedoms/thanages | Burghs (from 1124) | Parishes | N/A | N/A |
14th century-1707 | Autonomous earldoms/lordships, e.g. Lordship of the Isles (til 1493), Earldom of Orkney | Shires | N/A | Burghs | Parishes | N/A | N/A |
1707-1930 | Scotland | Shires, and counties of cities (from 1889) | Shire subdivisions, e.g. wards of Lanarkshire (til 1889) | Burghs | Parishes | N/A | Subdivisions of cities, e.g. Edinburgh parishes |
1930-1975 | Scotland | Shires/counties, and counties of cities | Large burghs | Small burghs | Landward districts (technically same level as burghs, but have less powers) | N/A | N/A |
1975-1996 | Scotland | N/A | Regions and unitary authorities | N/A | Districts | N/A | Community councils |
1996-present | Scotland | N/A | Council areas | N/A | N/A | N/A | Community councils |
