Past Events and projects
There was an Oxford mapping Sunday on 11th December 2006. See http://dev.openguides.org/wiki/OxfordMeetup2006 for more details.
Cycle mapping
Mapping Oxford for Cyclists - introductory big meeting, start of something nice, we hope. Basic introduction to OSM for the Cyclox membership and anyone else who wants to attend. Implement part of the mapping workflow in (recyclable) dead tree material for less techie / more time-pressed people.
20 mph zones
- Get the new Oxford 20mph zones into the map data: the scheme goes live on 1 Sept 2009, and it would be nice to have the info in by then. Microplan:
- Obtain the data - DONE
- In many places there are nice new signposts at the entrances to residential areas with no signs on
- News reports: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/4550677.20mph_signs_go_up_around_Oxford/
- Incomplete list of roads affected at http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/20limits
- Ask County Hall nicely for a full list -- User:Socks did so and they very kindly sent a copy of the the Road Traffic Order as a Microsoft Word file.
- Clarify that we can use it - DONE
- Copyright - does this apply to a list of names?
- Database Right - more applicable, less understandable. We'd be doing a rather complete import of a big list.
- "from the council bloke: "Hi - thanks - no, the information on speed limits is publicly available so no problem in your using it. Perhaps the only thing to note is that speed limits do obviously change from time to time, and I guess it would be appropriate to have a disclaimer to say that while accurate at the time of compiling your map, it may not reflect subsequent changes - (no doubt there is in any case something to this effect any way??"
- Guess that's OK then... most routing apps will make disclaimers of that sort themselves. If someone makes a map rendering based on this data, they should add disclaimers of the form suggested.
- Incorporate the data citywide - User:Achadwick, others?
- The data comes in two tables: a set of partial roads, and a bigger table of complete roads.
- incorporate partials: DONE.
- script the import of all the complete road lengths -- achadwick, Done
- TODO: cleanup after the script runs: in progress: see the list of missing roads below.
- Tagging scheme:
- maxspeed=20 mph
- maxspeed:note=Oxford 20 mph zone FIXME: should probably be source:maxspeed really
- The partials are defined by their relations to other ways in human-readable format. It's nice to have the spec in the db so that if the node gets moved accidentally it can be put back to where it belongs. So tag start and end s as well as the s themselves, and for some of them add
- maxspeed:spec=<textual description of what defines this node's location or this way's limit>
- Examples: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/473711249 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/39542301
- Tagging a node with maxspeed=20 mph makes it display nicely in JOSM even if it has no additional meaning to a routing engine. Ease of editing is good!
- TODO: Cross-check with the other articles above: pretty much everything else inside the ring road will be 30mph save fast ones like Marston Ferry Road. It might be worth making a render in which one colour is used for 20 mph roads and another for roads-which-could-be-20mph (ie, every highway= apart from footway and cycleway) in order to highlight (for example) service roads and stubs which are in the zone but not been captured by the above process.
- JOSM does this quite nicely with a search too
- Generate a list of roads 'missing' in OSM - DONE: /20mph missing roads.
- The data comes in two tables: a set of partial roads, and a bigger table of complete roads.
- Party. After this, we'll presumably be able to say that we have Every Street In Oxford on the map. Maybe a little celebration would be in order?
- Obtain the data - DONE
