Pafid
PAFID is a non-profit organization providing mapping services to Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines through collaborative efforts like participatory and resource mapping as a tool for asserting IP rights to resources and ancestral domain.
The institution maintains comprehensive datasets of various topographic features of IP lands. These data includes topographic features such as roads, rivers, contour elevation, community resources, ancestral domain boundaries.
PAFID gave permission to import to OSM topographic features digitized from 1:50,000 topographic maps.
Datasets
The datasets are divided into each toposheet. Approximately 179 (18% of the whole country) 1:50000 toposheets were digitized. There isn't any single database, data types, formats and spatial referencing for all the data.
Data type
- Rivers - rivers, creeks and streams
- Roads - roads and trails
- Landuse
- Marine resources - coral reefs
- Geographic names - places, mountain peaks
Sample filenames
23431trl - trails 23431riv - rivers catlanuse - landuse CATAGREEFS - coral reefs 23431pol - admin boundaries 23431poinfea - point features
Sample Image
Formats
- ESRI Shapefile
- Cartalinks vectors
Spatial Reference
- Luzon 1911
- Luzon 1911 / Philippines zone I
- Luzon 1911 / Philippines zone II
- Luzon 1911 / Philippines zone III
- Luzon 1911 / Philippines zone IV
- Luzon 1911 / Philippines zone V
Plan
- Review the data schema and match data attributes to OSM tags.
- Reproject all data to EPSG Projection 4326 - WGS 84
- Import to OSM
- Option 1 - combine all individual toposheet into one big OSM and run a bulk import script. Let the community edit afterwards.
- Option 2 - Provide individual OSM file for each toposheet. Check for data errors, merge with existing OSM data. Individual OSM user imports tha data to OSM.
- Option 3 - provide a WMS for OSM editors

subject: request to use PAFID data for Openstreetmap Philippines To: "Kail M Zingapan" <XXXXXXXX>, "Dave De Vera" <XXXXXXXXX> dave and kail, As you both know, my personal advocacy for geospatial tech in the Philippines are FOSS-geo and free data. As part of my effort to provide free data, I am actively contributing to openstreetmap.org. OSM is a geodata wiki providing free data for the whole world. An example of our efforts in Metro Manila is here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.5754&lon=121.0439&zoom=12&layers=B000FTF You can download the map images or get the raw vector data and add them to your mapping projects following OSM's creative commons license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ I am writing you to request for data donations from PAFID. We can add any kind of geospatial data into OSM. Some of the things I am interested are: topographic features, landcover, roads, etc. Of course given resource use conflict in many of your IP areas, we can exclude information that you think shouldn't be added in OSM. I am very much willing to process and edit your data for conversion to OSM. I am also interested in georectified topomaps which we can ask OSM Philippine volunteers to do digitizing. I think I can get somebody to webhost your topomaps for digitizing in OSM. I can visit your office to discuss further details of this initiative. cheers, Maning Sambale For Openstreetmap Philippines
