Project of the week/2011/Apr 06
April 2011 - Food Month continues
April is food month. We'll be tagging various portions of the food supply system in and around our homes. We'll look at marketplaces for the full month; venues for many vendors. Through the month we'll look at individual vendors of various foods. As always, Project of the Week and Project of the Month exist only to encourage your mapping. You don't need to wait for a project to add a cheese shop to the map!
Grocery stores and supermarkets
Grocery stores sell fresh fruit and vegetables. A greengrocer might only sell fruit and vegetables, while a supermarket might also include other food ingredients like grains, meat and fish and processed foods.
The Project of the Month is to map your local sources of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Tagging suggestions
A grocery store may be represented as a point or an area in OpenStreetMap.
Required tags
When adding grocery stores to OpenStreetMap, consider the scale and product mix of the store and decide to mark it as either a greengrocer or supermarket. Grocery stores must sell food ingredients; if the shop sells primarily processed food, consider adding it as another type of shop such as "deli". Supermarkets include food ingredients beyond fruit and vegetables and tend to be much larger than greengrocers.
- either
- shop=greengrocer # fresh fruit and vegetables
- shop=supermarket # fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, canned fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, ...
- name=*
- building=retail # for a building outline. Building = yes is also correct but building = retail carries more context.
Recommended tags
Be sure to include opening hours.
- opening_hours=Tu-Sa 05:00-17:00 # see opening_hours=* for many other examples.
Add addressing information for the shop.
Add building entrance locations as nodes on the building outline way.
