Maybe we need to differentiate between a disused railway, with the rails and track still intact, and a dismantled railway, with the track lifted. Welshie 20:21, 6 Jul 2006 (UTC)

Well, they should use a railway timetable for that! A geographical map is particularly unsuited for planning rail journeys. Seriously, there are many freight-only railways in the UK and these are all tagged railway=rail, so it shouldn't present a problem. Morwen 22:50, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Why only for Railways?

Perhaps we need the same for highways. Also i think its important which type the railway was before it was disused. I would suggest:

railway=tram use_status=disused

or (for a highway)

highway=motorway use_status=disused

The should be also: under_construction and planing

use_status=[disused|dismantled|under_construction|planing]

This property can also be useful for buildings

.. Nice idea, but it wouldn't really cope with a former railway track that is now a highway=cycleway. The fact that it used to be a railway track is of great interest to cyclists, because historically, railway tracks are nice and easy gradient. Welshie 15:40, 13 September 2006 (BST)

For this you would need a property tag such as old_way = railway_rail ie

highway=cycle_way

old_way=railway_rail

or in the case of a cycleway near me

highway=cycleway

old_way=highway_tertiary

This tag is in use!

On 19 September 2006 the tags railway=disused and railway=abandoned were added to the Map features page. I would like to move this to Approved features for clarity, but there has been no visible voting.... --Cartinus 19:05, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

it's probably one of the original features that were developed at the start of OSM, before voting took place. i think it's established enough to leave it at that Myfanwy 02:54, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
