A funeral directors isnt a mortuary though, a mortuary specifically deals with the immediate post-death stuff, is usually located in a hospital. The funeral home is usually where the deceased then gets passed on to? The two have very different connotations to me. --Thomas Wood 21:12, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

For me it's not needed for them to be rendered on the map. For me it's ok if they are rendered on the fly, from for example OpenStreetBrowser. I'm not against it being added to the slippy map though. Logictheo 11:51,15:55(edit), 2 June 2009 (UTC)

"is usually located in a hospital"

Where is that? Not in Greece for sure. Here you can have it alongside most other shops like pharmacies(chemist's) and banks and fast food stores. I don't know of any specific statistics regarding this though, just from personal surveying. logictheo 07:10, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

In Portugal, Morgue is more the place to hold the dead usually in hospitals (refrigerated "storage") and place where autopsies are conducted (usually before being prepared for the burial) and normally do not have public access. Mortuary is more linked to the place where the coffin is placed for ceremonies before the burial/cremation with access to the public. SO i think the two are different and valid for diferent features. --Victorferreira 01:57, 1 September 2011 (BST)

There is already shop=funeral_directors. --Scai 20:22, 22 August 2010 (BST)

Definitions

The wikipedia article referred to above (wikipedia:Funeral home) is not a global article, but focuses on the United States and Canada. This article equates funeral home, funeral parlor and mortuary. Wiktionary on the other hand, in part equates Wiktionary:mortuary and Wiktionary:morgue as both being a place, building or room "where dead bodies are stored prior to burial or cremation". In American English, though, the two terms are not strictly synonymous as 'morgue' conotes involvement of government or official authorties (including disaster missions, hospitals and police), whereas 'mortuary' conotes more civilian, religious or social use.

Wiktionary goes on to define Wiktionary:funeral home as a type of mortuary, one "where the friends and relatives of the deceased may attend a wake, or pay their last respects".

Wiktionary equates Wiktionary:funeral director and Wiktionary:undertaker, with the definition of funeral director being somewhat more limited, as it is restricted to "one who arranges funerals", while an undertaker is "someone whose business is to manage funerals, burials and cremations". In American Enlish, though, 'undertaker' has a negative connotation and is seldom used in polite conversation any longer.

Another point is that all of these terms are biased towared North America and Europe; funeral practices in places such as India, China and Japan vary significantly from those in the West and are not well dealt with presently.
