Proposal:Jetties and piers

A jetty is a man-made structure built out into a river, lake or the sea. Historically they are built for mooring and/or loading vessels. They may also be designed for leisure purposes, such as Blackpool Pier in the UK or over-water walks in Sydney harbour, Australia.
Examples:
- A small wooden structure built out a few metres into a lake or river to moor or land a rowing boat.
- Larger structures built into lakes, harbours, marinas to moor or land pleasure boats or fishing boats.
- A ferry landing, e.g Hong Kong, Sydney.
- A pier built into the sea, popular in the UK, for pleasure purposes and may feature a pedestrian promenade and eating or amusement places, e.g. Brighton Piers, Blackpool Pier (UK), Santa Monica Pier (US). They can have a secondary function of housing a ferry terminal.
- A structure taking an oil or gas pipeline into deeper water for loading/unloading by tanker vessels.
- Commercial Wharves. A wharf is a shoreline structure for loading/unloading cargo vessels. Smaller ones can be shown as jetties. Larger ones would be more appropriately mapped as part of the shoreline.
Jetties are typically built of wood or metal on pilings (columns in the water) or solid filled structures of concrete.

As proposer, I marginally favour manmade=jetty but would like to see other opinions first.
I'd also invite comment on precisely what should be covered. My own opinion is that for practical mapping "jetty" should cover leisure, mooring and loading structures and that "breakwater" should cover structures built for protecting harbours and for preventing coastal erosion. I'd note though that some dictionary definitions include both as jetties.

- Piers should be distinguished from leisure piers (i think they could be tagged as piers anyway, using some restriction). Jetty has a different function (pleasure piers, jetty). --Vincivis 09:54, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Withdrawing my support, as jetty is variously used to mean breakwater or pier. Because of this confusion, and since Pier is approved already, pier should be used instead. TRS-80 11:52, 30 September 2007 (BST)
I like jetty. I think pier is just a variation of a jetty. The only concern is how to tag the association of a pier and a breakwater ? Gummibaerli 20:04, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
There should be a comprihendable list of port facilities, including explainations. Needed features include pier, jetty, wharf, quay, breakwater, mooring buoy, storage tanks, ISPS (security) checkpoints, cranes (stationable or on rails), dry docks, slips (usually on ship yards). There must also be a way to determin wether a port facility is for pleasure (yachts) or for buseniss (industrial ports), and terminals that allow passengers board directly into passenger liners and cruise ships should also be marked. ISPS checkpoints are vital to know for persons and companies that do delivery to ISPS port areas, which includes almost all industrial ports. --Skippern 05:20, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
