Proposal
This Proposal wants to establish the tag kerb:approach_aid=yes/no as a tag to be placed on with public_transport=platform together with kerb=raised.
Rationale
An approach aid is a specially formed kerb that helps buses to approach a platform. When the bus is approaching the platform the curved kerb automatically guides the tires of the bus along the platform. This ultimately helps to reliably minimize the gap between bus and platform which is crucial for wheelchair users, people with strollers and bicycles. The gap width between vehicle and platform determines whether disabled people can enter a public transport vehicle on their own and how difficult it is. Approach aids also reduce tire rub and may prevent wheel hub damage.
Having this data in OpenStreetMap helps to identify Kassel Kerbs [1] and similar bus boards. Public transport routing software can then make use of this to provide/calculate more accessible routes.
The namespace kerb:*=* was chosen because an approach_aid is a property of the kerb itself, as without a (raised) kerb, no approach aid can exist.
Why aren't we proposing a more complete scheme if the types of approach aid are easily recognizable?
We indeed started out wanting to tag the approach aids with complete tags like kerb:approach_aid=guidance_with_recess
, but it turned out that theese categories aren't really sharply defined. Different companies produce a wide range of kerbs for bus stops, and they all fall into one, none or multiple categories. Additionally, a clear definition that simply categorizes the approach aids by function is also not possible, as different manufacturers claim different upsides to their shapes. This PDF from RAILBETON lists 8 different kerbs, where a clear association with a specific category would not be possible.
Tagging
An approach aid should only be tagged on elements with kerb=raised. Tags like kerb=lowered or kerb=flush imply kerb:approach_aid=no. On separate kerb elements kerb:approach_aid=no is assumed though it may be tagged differently (e.g. when the kerb of a platform is mapped separately).
Type | Example Image | Tagging | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Raised kerb without approach aid | kerb:approach_aid=no | There is no approach aid for busses. | |
Raised kerb with approach aid | kerb:approach_aid=yes | The kerb is in some way formed to make it easier for the bus to drive close to it. This must include a rounded bottom (concave fillet) optionally a recess at the top of the kerb may be present. |

Rendering
No special rendering is suggested in general-purpose map styles such as carto. However, special-interest map styles may choose to adopt a special rendering to show the approach aid.

- I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. I don't really see a difference between the example top picture (with `kerb:approach_aid=no`) and the examples with `kerb:approach_aid=yes`. They just look a little bit slanted regular kerbs. Hence, I don't know if it will be possible to unambiguously distinguish dedicated approach aids from regular kerbs which exist in all kind of shapes too. --Famlam (talk) 10:30, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
