A stack yard, lumber yard, timber yard, or any other area used for temporary or long-time storage.

Rationale

Plenty of map features exist for storage (see section "similar tags"), but they are mostly about buildings and other closed structures. This proposal is for storage predominantly in open air.

As opposed to landuse=landfill, the storage is intended to preserve goods or materials for possible later use.

How to map

While mapping as a node is permitted when you have absolutely no idea about the extension of the area, mapping as an area (possibly a multipolygon) is recommended otherwise. It is also recommended to use storage=* to specify what is stored in that area.

The area may be part of landuse=industrial or landuse=forest etc.

Note that there is confusion between the terms "wood", "lumber" and "timber", see explanation. In OSM, we are supposed to use British English, therefore "lumber" for unprocessed wood and "timber" for processed wood. But they will certainly be mixed up in other parts of the world. Maybe we should just use the hypernym storage=wood for both to avoid confusion? Please share your opinion!
