It could be nice to have the dams rendered.
The render of a dam has to show in which direction the water run, eg 
But as two consecutive way showing water don't turn in the same sense (because of the common segment), the tags could be dam_right and dam_left, depending of the side of the segment where the water falls.

Imagine you have a river and a dam at each side of the river

(where < represents the dam) The segments of the river have to be reused to tag both dams, but the two segments do not point in the same direction. So we have to indicate for each dam if the water falls in the right or in the left side of the dam.

- Why do we have to reuse the segments of the river to tag the dam?
- Why can't we simply make standard that the downstream side is always the right, or the left?
- Under what circumstances would there be two dams, one at each side of the river (as you describe?)

Surely a Dam should just be displayed using the standard method used on topo maps - a thick black line running along the top of the Dam feature? I would think the direction the water falls is irrelevent as it is either obvious, or doesn't matter anyway. Dams in Australia rarely have water flowing over them anyway, it flows over the slipway off to the side, or out of pipes. --Swampwallaby 22:48, 12 August 2007 (BST)
For dams which are small (example image from Google maps) should we just use landuse=reservoir? . Generally these are rendered as small blue hollow squares if they are not on a watercourse. Justcameron 16:57, 23 September 2007 (BST)

I think there is some confusion here. I think this proposal should be talking about the actual Concrete or Earth Dam wall. In Australia, 'Dam' is a common term for the water impounded behind a dam wall, which is already taken care of by either natural=water or landuse=reservoir.--Swampwallaby 01:38, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
