Proposal
It is proposed to change the current "in use" tagging scheme from site_type=fortification + fortification=ringfort to site_type=settlement + settlement_type=ringfort.
Rationale
At the date of draft, there were just over 8,000 ringforts recorded on OSM as fortification_type=ringfort[1]. However, even though they are described as "fortified" on Wikipedia, they are domestic settlements for families or groups of families rather than a military structure. It is therefore suggested to use a more "civil" tag than fortification_type=* which might conjure up pictures of walls, watchtowers and guards rather than earthworks and wooden palisades.
There are also some sites tagged with the name=Ringfort
or similar and no further classification.

Rendering
Due to their high number, it is suggested that they get their own icon which represents a bi-vallate ringfort as a default.

- ↑ Some might "just" be enclosures and unintentionally wrongly tagged as ringforts. Maybe there should be a discussion about being more careful with applying the
ringfort
value.
