Rationale
Some cul-de-sac roads (in German: Sackgasse) have an area at their end to allow turning. There are several different shapes in reality. In German this area is called Wendehammer or Wendeplatz. This area does not have marks, even no direction to turn is enforced. Mostly parking on this area isn't allowed.
In Spain I have seen these areas also in the middle of some normal residential street.
It is important to know if a cul-de-sac road allows turning or if one has to back out backwards.
Applies to
- Node
Usage
<tag k="highway" v="roundend"/>
Rendering
A filled round area around the center of the node. This will be mostly at the end of the way. The areas diameter should be larger then the streets width. Optionally a width tag could be used for adjustment if default width doesn't represent the real area good enough.
Remarks
A similar proposal for turning_circle had been given on 2007-04-26. But not taken off.
There are currently different approaches used:
- creating an area at the end of the way and specify "area=yes"
- Disadvantage: extra work to create the area.
- Currently the area isn't filled, thus the way gets a loop at its end. It doesn't look nice.
- specifying "highway=mini_roundabout"
- It isn't a real roundabout. Which is usally at junctions. This stretches the meaning of roundabout quite a lot.
- The icon doesn't look good on the map. Besides that it isn't that important.
Advantages of the proposed key/tag:
- The proposal would simplify the maping process as only a tag for a node has to be specified.
- Since no icon would be used on the map it wouldn't draw any special attention.
Comments
I do not know how complicated this is to render. Maybe someone with background could comment on this. Toralf 14:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
So what about a squareend, a triangleend, a evenmorecomplicatedend .... bad idea, draw it and declare is as an area, it would at least be correct ... --PhilippeP 20:07, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's true that there are different shapes. But a circle should be a good enough approximation for these ends. In the rare case that the shape of the end is totally different, of cause an area can still be drawn. Toralf 23:26, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- I was searching for such a tag some times ago and had a look for the german word "Wendeplatte" at dict.leo.org and found turning_circle an appropriate translation. So I approve the presence of such a tag. Never the less, round end doesn't seem to me a good name. Perhaps a native speaking can comment --MichaelK 20:09, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- as a native english speaker, yes most in england would know what a turning circle is. and it's generic, regardless of the actual shape of the area Myfanwy 01:42, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- If different shapes are a problem, why not use turning_area or turning_point or even just turning? I agree that something like this is necessary. Robx 07:55, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
- "tunring_point" for what? normally from a turning-point some foot- or cycleways continue, so the turning_point lost it's meaning. To draw a closed way for the turning-area is the best way, IMHO --Cbm 13:43, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- well, as it's attached to the road, it obviously relates to the road, and is for turning vehicles around. the foot/cycle path is irrelevant Myfanwy 01:42, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- the idea is sound. some roads have one at the end, some don't, and it would be a lot easier than drawing a closed way each time. terrible name though, turning_circle would be better. Myfanwy 01:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
