Why not use highway=path or highway=service?
Resolved: Main proposal tag changed from highway=cartpath to highway=service + service=cartpath --Lectrician1 (talk) 19:00, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
I think most golf cart paths qualify as either a highway=path or a highway=service: - Some are too narrow for full-sized cars but can be used by people on bicycles, people walking, and people driving small vehicles like golf carts. These can be highway=path, no? - Some are as wide as any service road and can easily accomodate a full-width car or truck, and are also used by service vehicles from the golf course, so highway=service seems appropriate for those.
Is there a distinctive characteristic to golf cart paths which can be used to tell them apart from a mixed-use path or service road? --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:31, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if any cartpaths exist that are wider than the width of the golf cart that aren't a service road. If those can accommodate normal vehicles, shouldn't it be labeled as a service road? This proposal aims to describe paths similar to the one shown in the first image of the Examples section.
- Paths seem to mostly be used for humans/animals so I will change the proposal Key to be service=cartpath.

- Re: ":I'm not sure if any cartpaths exist that are wider than the width of the golf cart that aren't a service road." A golf cart is a little less than 1 meter wide, so it's possible for them to use paths as narrow as 1.5 meters which would not fit a standard-size motorcar. This path is about 2 meters wide: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cycling_the_Dundarave_paved_golf_cart_path,_Brudenell,_PEI_(25605358943).jpg which is about the width of a highway=footway in my area. And it's possible to have bollards which are 1.5 meters apart to block the entrance of a golf path which is ~3 meters wide to allow 2-way traffic of golf carts. A car could use such a path if the bollards are removable, for servicing the golf course, but the bollards make it clear that the main use is golf carts (plus people walking and perhaps bikes). Also consider that many highway=cycleway and highway=path (paved multi-use paths) are about this wide and similarly use bollards to keep cars out. However, I agree that on many golf courses the cart paths are wide enough to be considered service roads, so the current proposal for highway=service + service=cartpath seems fine for most situations. --Jeisenbe (talk) 23:29, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
