Will these tags only create an unsafe map?
There is an important question about naval map; a map from OSM will not be safe before it is complete. Therefore I ask this question: should we make these tags, or will we then make an unsafe map?
I think we should make a naval map, since this will make the possibility that OSM could get a donation of naval map. In the first place I think this map should not be dependent on. For example it could be used when kayaking or taking a ferry.
And remember it could happen that in fifty or maybe hundred years, there would only be used an open map also on ships. Never say never!

- As much as I want a free ECDIS map, the need of certification of software and map data prevents this, at least in the merchant fleet. If I ever can get rid of those paper charts that we are using all the time, than we must have installed two independent certified systems with slightly different configuration and setup. Without such certification, the system can only be used as a reference (i.e. as an advanced GPS receiver) while what we want is a reliable system that can replace paper charts. --Skippern 21:40, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
IHO-S-57 standard
How does this relate to the IHO-S-57 schema for seamarks? Is there any cooperation with the OpenSeaMap project here? I'd hate to see division of effort if we can make something better by working together! --tms13 11:14, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- IHO-S-57 schema is about two things, what seamarks to include (would guess that to be of interest to this proposal) and how to render them on a map (shouldn't be part of this proposal but highly interesting for OpenSeaMap. I would like to see the tagging of navaids and seamarks to be as accurate, simple, and logical as possible. Unfortienately I have no time to aid in this process. --Skippern 13:49, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Confusion with aviation use
Please be aware that the term "navaid" is used in aviation also. I even seem to remember some navaids are used both by sailors and by aviators, namely non-directional radio beacons in the Medium Wave frequency band. The aviation term is NDB. Also, rotating light beacons seem to be in use at US'an aerodromes. Should there be one feature definition for both marine and aeronautical navaids? If so, it would have to be fairly extensive.
