Database rights
OpenBeta scraped a lot of data from Mountain Project, which is legal under US copyright law for purely factual data (Mountain Project says so themselves, and depends on this legality to exist), but OSM is not under US copyright law and has to deal with database rights, so this might not be possible? There's a discussion on Slack about it. Brightj (talk) 17:12, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reference to the slack conversation - I'll check it out once slack invites are working again. The first thing I need to understand is exactly this; to what extent it is even possible for OpenBeta and OSM to interoperate. It does seem like any data OpenBeta data for the US could not be added to OSM (they only use the scraped data for the US). Less clear to me is whether data could be synced for other regions or if one way references to OSM for geographic data are possible as a "collective database". I'm sure the slack conversation will have insights. --4b3eff (talk) 18:50, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
