Proposal talk:Sea mark
This tag seems reasonable and has my support. xylome 2008-06-16 08:39 UTC
Sea mark
Sea Mark is a Master-Tag like "highway". It is necessary for drawing sea-maps.
We need a lot of sea-marks:
- Buoy / Beacon - atributes: typ, color, form, flashmode, repetition, range, sector, etc.
- Lighthouse - atributes: typ, color, form, flashmode, repetition, range, sector, ele over water, etc.
- Depth-line - for 2m 5m 10m 20m 50m 100m, with automatical coloring the area between depth-line, next depth-line and coast (even if the dept-line is not closed).
- Wreck - attributes: depth, depth of the highest point, year of accident, shipname
- Anchorpoint
- Fuelstation
- Freshwater
- Waistwater
- ...

- I don't do sailing but have recently marked few lateral buoys, as per Proposed_features/Buoy just out of curiosity.
Wouldn't these features fit under waterway=*, (except for the ones that are already approved elsewhere, e.g. lighthouses and wrecks (already at man_made=lighthouse and historic=wreck)? amenity=fuel could be used for fuel stations accessible by boats, too, by explicitly adding the tag boat=yes. Alv 07:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)- Just noticed that the proposal page template has it marked as such, but the comment above on this talk page was misleading. I'd still put all these under the waterway tag. Alv 07:12, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
There is an essential difference between "streetmap"-signs and sea-signs. It does not really metter, where the fuel-station is, but the position of a lighthouse is evident. Sea-signs is a big system, worldwide normed. It is not useful to "make a tag" - we need hundreds, and they have to be corresponding to the WHO-system. --Markus 10:28, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- What does WHO (World Health Organication) have to do with this? Guess you mean IMO (International Maritime Organication). Yes there are a lot of tags, but anybody who have worked with marine charts knows roughly how many, and can easilly correct where needed. I can give a list according to UKHO on Sailor Main when I have a little more time at hand. I have since 2001 corrected marine charts according to UKHO/Admirality guide lines. --Skippern 19:43, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- True but if you reffer to the statment on OSM main page, it says. "OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways." This to me says you can use OSM for mor that just streets. Sea marks will mark routes on waterways and with advancements with GPS units and vehicles, these marks will become essintial.--Nickvet419 19:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Do we have a central disussion-page for to speak about? --Markus 10:28, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

- Hello, I wanted to introduce myself: Following a proposal by Markus, I am presently in the process to provide a number of nautical map icons as vector grafics for Wikipedia Commons. I am following International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standards for this venture:
- http://www.iho.shom.fr/publicat/free/files/PresLib_e3.4_Part_I_Addendum.pdf for the ECDIS standard
- http://www.iho.shom.fr/publicat/free/files/INT1_FR_Ed.4.pdf for INT 1 map symbols
- For first (provisional) results, take a look at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Nautical_Chart_Icons
- If you want to comment on this or help, it would be easiest if you contacted me through my talk page on german wikipedia http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Hk_kng, since this is where I will be looking daily. English language talk is certainly acceptable. I will also try to take a look at this wiki from time to time, but since I am not primarily a map maker but a general graficist, it will remain most probably a bit at the fringes of my regular working field. --Hk kng 11:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I would like to propose the tag navaid=* As this could be incorporated with the tags 'beacon' and man_made|buoy as perhaps a standard tag. A Navaid is actually a navigational aid, as apposed to a Buoywhich is something thats floating.
With no objections i'll create the page. --acrosscanadatrails 11:01, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- We are developing a DB-scheme according to IHO-S-57 for all seamarks. If you are a seaman and firm with S-57 and XLM, please send me a mail. --Markus 15:10, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- No sorry, im not familiar with the scheme (but i know it exists). However, my argumenet is that the tag "sea_mark=*" should only be used for the IHO-S-57 and only the "official" numbers/characters should be used. (kind of like airport YYZ classification code) But a more standard tag of "navaid=sea_mark" should be used. As I want to create the "navaid=lighthouse", "navaid=beacon" & "navaid=buoy" tags. Does this make sence? --acrosscanadatrails 03:29, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
- The stuff is to complicated for normal users. So we would like to simplify it by a tag-editor. Therefore we look for a Java-programmer. If you may help or if you now a programmer: please send me a mail. --Markus 20:32, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Cool, then i take-back my original comment, and will use the sea_mark=beacon for the map features i'm looking at (a beacon without a light). There is no way to tell what patterns/colors are on these beacons. Therefore adding the tag day_beacon=region_A_red (or whatever it is) should be done upon physical survay. (Sorry im not a java programmer) --acrosscanadatrails 21:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Region A and B should NOT be done with tagging, the systems are totally uniform, and the border between them are clearly stated. If it is necessary to give more input of Region A and B, do this by a boundary or a relation. Most maps will be either Region A or Region B, so differing between them is only needed in the renderer (either render A or render B tagging). --Skippern 21:03, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Understood, so i will switch my tag to be sea_mark=day_beacon for the features listed as (Beacon - unlit navigational aid) in the canvec feature set. --acrosscanadatrails 21:34, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

- I am making a draft for navaid, it is not completed, but I would like to know what you think about it, and if it should be posted --User:Tibnor 15:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Be bold, :) (and comments about that tag can be shown) the worst that can happen is that it's status gets 'rejected', after a vote. And hopefully this here proposal would be accepted as a sub value for navaid. --acrosscanadatrails 23:52, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
list values for sea_mark
Hi, I think it would be a good idea to list & make a chart of all the values for this key. Thanks --acrosscanadatrails 22:31, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
seamark, sea_mark or sea mark?
This area of the wiki is incredibly confusing. Is the proposed tag seamark or sea_mark for starters? Should the title of this proposal not match the preferred text rather than having a space in it? PeterIto 09:08, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
