hard to pass
"for cars is similar to bump, but hard to pass" - what is meant by this? Why it is "hard to pass"? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:24, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
It means that you have to really slow down. Tomascz (talk) 11:10, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
I edited page a bit - hopefully it is better (feel free to undo my change). Problem with "but" was that it seemed to describe that "hard to pass" makes them different from bumps, while it was making them similar Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:32, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
it is not a rumble strip, right
Just to confirm that this thread on tagging mailing list is a mistake - for cars it actually requires slowing down, right? It is not just a rumble strip? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:36, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it's not rumble strip. You are right, a car has to slow down. Tomascz (talk) 11:10, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
bumb vs. bump
Yes, it was a typo. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you Mateusz Konieczny for the fix.
- No problem. glad that I helped :) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:32, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
Alternative names
traffic_calming=hillocks (more grammatical according to mailing list post)

- Probably rather traffic_calming=circle_bumps Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:30, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
I believe traffic_calming=circle_bumps to be pleasingly descriptive. I have seen such "raised circles" applied to roadways this way and agree that traffic_calming=* isn't (currently) complete enough to describe these without such a descriptive value. As a native speaker of US English, I say "circle_bumps" is a good choice. Stevea (talk) 10:29, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Nitpicking, but a circle is just the outline. traffic_calming=round_bumps, traffic_calming=disc_bumps seem more correct. Still, traffic_calming=circle_bumps seems acceptable to me. --Gileri (talk) 14:05, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
They are not always circular. I leave an example https://t.me/osm_ar/39276 small_bumps seems fine to me. AgusQui (talk) 15:13, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- IMHO the small studs shown in that picture are not the same as the item being described here. They do not appear large enough to cause a car to slow down by making a "vertical deviation". They appear to me to be much closer to a rumble strip; alerting the driver, by making as noise, as they drive over them. --PeterPan99 (talk) 09:15, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- These seem to me like traffic_calming=rumble_strip --Stefanct (talk) 09:18, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
I'll throw traffic_calming=circular_bumps into the (too? late) discussion. Circle bumps sounds strange to me. Also, I think the whole circular phrasing is distracting from the defining point: these bumps are broken up into separated pieces. Some more unmentioned ideas that better reflect this fact to make them better applicable for non-circular mini-bumps (i like the traffic_calming=mini_bumps proposal by Mateusz). traffic_calming=split_bump, traffic_calming=broken_bump, traffic_calming=divided_bump, traffic_calming=partitioned_bump, or all in plural... --Stefanct (talk) 09:18, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Hmm. Yes, perhaps it is a little too late to start lobbying for alternative values. As a native (British) English speaker, "circle_bumps" does sound a bit odd, but it is quite descriptive and therefore easy to understand. I don't think it is worth re-opening the debate at this stage. --PeterPan99 (talk) 09:29, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Here is one instance that I think should be covered by this new tag (although the background is a bit different) but arguably isn't due to the name: [1] --Stefanct (talk) 09:36, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Description could be parsed two ways
The Description says "A group of small bumps in a shape of a circle, installed as traffic calming device"
My first reading of this was "A group of small bumps (of unspecified shape) placed on the circumference of a circle."
I suggest, for clarity, "A group of small circular bumps, installed as a traffic calming device". --Brian de Ford (talk) 11:40, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

This is a duplicate of your posting in the "Alternative Names" section above. Please try to avoid such duplicate posting ín future. I STILL don't think that the photo shows the item being described in this proposal. --PeterPan99 (talk) 09:24, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- OK, PeterPan99 (talk) says there is at least one disagreement with the description, a picture and his or her idea of what is being described. The sub-heading is "description could be parsed two ways." Are the DOTS circular (it doesn't matter, they are sometimes rectangular) or is the design of how they are laid down on the pavement a circle (seems strange, but I wouldn't be surprised if some traffic department found that works in a specific way to frequently cause a certain decrease in speed, with a certain effect." We don't know. The picture is "close" (not exact) to what I've seen in the real world, the difference is the dot density is more sparse. But: this isn't a table, it isn't a hump, it is made out of what I've heard called "Bott's Dots" and asphalt adhesive (nasty, sticky stuff to glue down each dot). If we agree that's what this proposal is about, we're much better along. Stevea (talk) 02:14, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- See, I added that comment before I looked at the Vienna link photo, a cycleway with a tight rectangular pattern of raised stones or something like stones (perhaps square plastic dots, it's hard to say). I'd call that a cycleway version of the same thing being described in this proposal: a deliberate, speed-reducing-intended raised pattern of "above the pavement bumps." We don't need to sub-specify every single version of these on the planet. In my opinion if we agree on an agreeable name and say "these (even if a bit roughly between this country and that state and the other county roads department, they do 'em a bit differently over there...)" OSM will be just fine. Stevea (talk) 02:25, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
