Proposal talk:Telecom local loop
More values proposal
In Italy, operator TIM (formerly known as Telecom Italia) is installing FTTC boxes atop of existing street cabinets, which are reached via VDSL2 technology. Moreover, two secondary operators (Vodafone and Fastweb) are installing their own cabinets next to TIM ones. In some cases, i.e. where there is not enough space available to install a cabinet, a manhole on the sidewalk or on the road is installed by a secondary operator in order to accommodate its own appliances. Thus, maybe a new key is needed to differentiate between a cabinet and a manhole. --SteveVG (talk) 12:29, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- Currently, common manhole aren't covered by this proposal. A further one will be needed to deal with them.
- A standard street cabinet has really few chances to be installed underground.
- If the manhole covers a real place with enough space to let a technician enter, then it's an underground building with eventually cabinets inside of it Fanfouer (talk) 23:37, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Multiple values
As multiple technologies are possible in the same cabinet, I would prefer something like
medium:fiber=yes
medium:coax=yes --Nospam2005 (talk) 19:29, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, do you have examples where several medium are present in the same node or equipment ?
- Chances are low to have a single network with several technologies. How to map section encourage to draw different OSM nodes when two or more logical network places cohabits in the same building
- Your solution is interesting, we'll think about it, thank you Fanfouer (talk) 12:40, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
Terminology
In the UK it is usual to refer to FTTP (premises) rather than write "FTTH or FTTO."
It might be useful to include a glossary. Then again, if you don't know what FTTP means then you probably shouldn't be mapping this stuff because you're very likely to get it wrong. :) Brian de Ford (talk) 13:11, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
Coaxial local loop: active or passive?
Hi,
Thanks for the proposal. The coaxial local loop seems to generate less interest than copper or fibre, there is only a single node tagged with medium:coaxial currently: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/telecom%3Amedium#values
I am wondering if street cabinets for the coaxial local loop should be tagged as "service_device" or "connection_point"?
The devices inside the street cabinets are often active, see an example I encountered: https://nuage.polyno.me/s/yye9Rae8eN7z2wb As far as I know, this kind of device can be powered either locally via the power grid, or from its upstream node through a special "fiber + copper" cable. The proposal for service_device explicitly excludes "amplifiers or repeaters" but maybe it should be clarified: does this also apply to this kind of device? --Zorun (talk) 21:41, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Zorun, this is a good point. Currently, amplifiers cabinets aren't covered by the proposal since telecom=service_device expliclty exclude them.
- We need an additional value dedicated to amplifiers or repeaters, likely to be far from telecom exchanges (while service devices are expected to be near them).
- What about telecom=amplifier? Fanfouer (talk) 23:23, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
More tags to replace
There are a more tags that would be replaced by your proposal, with notable usage (>100):
- https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/telecom=connection : either a mistake or an older form of telecom=connection_point
- https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/telecom=street_cabinet : should probably be replaced by man_made=street_cabinet
--Zorun (talk) 22:33, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you. Accepted and merged in the page.
- I've added https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/telecom=outdoor_dslam too since it's an old version of telecom=service_device Fanfouer (talk) 23:33, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
