Proposal talk:Terrain accident

Tag name

I am confused by the name. Is this a cartographical term I am not aware of? I only understand the lay meaning of the word accident, and it is hard to see how the creation of levees and terraces could be regarded as accidental!

I think it is the natural disaster of landslides. I have seen pictures of otherwise gently rolling grassland hills scarred with cravices from recent deep landslides. I really think these features should be marked just with natural=.. /Johan Jönsson 14:29, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Accident in french can mean uneven feature (from the idea that you travel and suddenly there happens to be an "accident" in the terrain). I did not carefully check the vocabulary, but my dictionary attests this usage for the word, albeit only by "specialists". I’ll look for another word but uneven= looks clumsy and natural is incorrect since terrain unevenness is not necessarily natural.--Pshunter 18:47, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Considering this is OpenStreetMap and "accident" is 49% used in English as a euphemism for a car crash on a street, 50% for a general physical mistake, and 1% used in the geologic sense, I'd propose that another term be considered. natural=* seems appropriate. See also natural=embankment and natural=cliff.

Also some tag for volcanic crater, sink hole, and large basin would be useful. --Hamish 07:06, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
