Proposal talk:Vessel
Use man_made=vessel + vessel=*
If a new key vessel=* is used alone, database users such as OpenStreetMap Carto which rely on osm2pgsql will have to update their database schemas and reload the whole planet database prior to being able to render any closed way features properly. This could delay rendering of this new tag for a year or more. Instead, I recommend using man_made=vessel as a top-level tag (if building=* is not considered acceptable), with vessel=* then specifying the type of ship or boat. Though perhaps man_made=ship would be clearer to landlubbers such as myself? --Jeisenbe (talk) 21:17, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm wondering how acceptable would *=watercraft be, covering both "ship"s and "boat"s, given there's historic=aircraft ("airplane" or "helicopter" isn't used in this respect). ---- Kovposch (talk) 05:58, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
Confusion on built-as and use
Asside from what's mentioned above, vessel=* still sounds similar to the undesirable ship:type=*. In line with building=* and building:use=*, why not convert the latter to eg ship=* (or some other ship:*=*), and yours to ship:use=*? Or can you define ship vs vessel? (they look interchangable ---- and "vessel" may be interpreted as a container on land) Of course, conflict with access:ship=* and distinguishing from "boat" (ship:type=lifeboat is somehow suggested in Tag:historic=ship#ship:type and used -- I'm not sure how the term "watercraft" should be used yet) would be issues. ---- Kovposch (talk) 05:33, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- The words "ship" and "vessel" are almost 100% interchangeable, the only significant difference in that "ship" is a little bit more informal and "vessel" is a bit more technical. Still you can use any of those in documentation without doubt. Boat is well - a small ship. You could probably call a 60 m long ship a boat but you probably wouldn't if it's a 100 m ship. I believe that "watercraft" is only used when you need to address all possible types and forms of floating vehicles at once - it's a quite abstract concept and the word is not usually used towards a single vehicle.
- The idea of ship:use=* sounds nice to me. Will it fare well with ship:use=yes or ship:use=wreck though? Maybe a key ship:role=* will do better unless it can be mingled with the roles of relations. And it looks like including man_made=ship or man_made=vessel would be an absolute nessesity as is stated above. ---- VileGecko (talk) 12:15, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
