Proposal
There are lots of areas used by service companies to host vehicles or other equipment they use to operate. This proposal is intended to suggest way to describe such areas and keep data usable for data consumers not interested in too detailed information.
This proposal is response to Proposed features/Depot and [1] and fear that we may see in future landuse=truck_depot_in_open_pit_copper_mine or similar.
Rationale
Creating more and more landuse values makes data less usable, nor more usable. More detailed information about how given area is used may be added but it is preferable to not expect that every single data consumer will process huge amount of landuse values.
Examples
This (Google Maps) is a bus depot in Milan. Using StreetView it's easy to see that access is controlled by a lift gate; also there's a washing station and an area for mechanical maintenance of the vehicles.
This (Google Maps) is another bus depot in Vercelli, Italy. The area is shared between the bus station on the eastern half (where the gate and the shelters are) and the western part where vehicles are parked (often for a long time). It is currently incorrectly mapped in OSM as a bus station, but this is inaccurate.
This (Google Maps) is a railway depot in Casale Monferrato, Italy. Again, it is not only a "parking area" for carriages, but it also hosts service buildings.
Finally, this (Google Maps) is a service depot next to the Vercelli Est exit of the A26 motorway near Vercelli. This is used by diverse service vehicles used by the motorway operator, ranging from trucks with light indicators, to tow trucks, to snow plowers, and may also occasionaly used to store some needed material, for example the salt that is to be put on the road at winter.
Tagging
Any depot should be already tagged with a proper landuse=* value. If it is impossible to draw the area, there's little point in indicating the existence of a depot with a node.
The depot value may be added with key corresponding to landuse to describe detailed purpose of area.
Also, most depots should have an operator=* tag to describe who uses the depot. access=private is also most likely applicable.
A sub-tag vehicle_depot=* may be used to specify what kind of vehicles is in the depot, or rather what the depot is used for. Example values may be "train", "tram", "bus", "service", "police".
In some cases multiple main landuse tags may be fitting - for example for some tram depots landuse=railway, landuse=commercial and landuse=industrial may be justified. In such cases selecting one landuse is vastly preferable over landuse=railway;commercial;industrial or similar values.
Examples
- train depots: landuse=railway+railway=vehicle_depot+vehicle_depot=train
- bus depot: landuse=commercial+commercial=vehicle_depot+vehicle_depot=bus
- tram depot: landuse=commercial+commercial=vehicle_depot+vehicle_depot=tram
- tram depot, operated as part of a railway system: landuse=railway+railway=vehicle_depot+vehicle_depot=tram
- etc
Applies to
Current use
railway=depot | commercial=depot | industrial=depot | depot=* |
railway=vehicle_depot | commercial=vehicle_depot | industrial=vehicle_depot | vehicle_depot=* |
Rendering
- In most renderings it may be safely ignored. Detailed transport rendering may display it.
