Description

See the full definition on wikipedia [1]

A canyon is a route within a stream or river. Difficulty varies a lot from a simple walk with water to very difficult rope techniques under waterfalls. Those Canyons requires equipement : Helmet, climbing harness, sometimes long rope like climbing and wet suit for cold water. The activity is called canyoning or canyoneering.

Most of the time it will not be possible to have a good trace with a GPS inside a canyon, the purpose will be to have at least the track from a possible parking place to the beginning of the canyon. The first node of the canyon will be tagged according to difficulty of the way. A relation will be made between the access track, the canyon and the return route.

The proposal will not replace dedicated topo guides but provide a help to find the route to the site.

note : If no special equipement is required, it should be tag as highway=path with the appropriate sac_scale=* but not with this proposal.

Tagging

Key Value Comment Recommendation
type route Defines the relation as route. relation mandatory
route canyoning The canyon with recommended access and return path to parking mandatory
rating Describe difficulty of the canyon according to local habits (see french reference) strongly recommended
max:abseil value in metres Define the minimum rope length needed to do the route strongly recommended

Note:

Rating canyon's difficulty - Cotation des difficultés des canyons

Les canyons français sont cotés de la manière suivante :

http://www.efcanyon.net/efcanyon/base-de-connaissance/normes-et-chartes/105-norme-classements-de-canyons

French FFME rates canyons lik this:

v letter followed by arabic figure from 1 to 7 (open scale) for difficulty in vertical parts

a letter followed by arabic figure from 1 to 7 (open scale) for difficulty in the water

Roman figure from I to VI for the overall difficulty and engagement

Other rating like American cayoneering association http://www.canyoneering.net/docs/ratings.pdf must be possible to tag

Rating Difficulty V Scale A Scale
1 Very easy Rope not needed No water or calm water walk, swimming optionnal
2 Easy Easy rappelling, easy climbing Swimming no more than 10 m in calm water. Simple jump less than 3 m, short slide
3 Not difficult Vertical parts with low flow, arrival in calm water. Simple rappel less than 30 m, climbing may need a rope. Swimming no more than 30 m in calm water. Simple jump 3 to 5 m, long slide or with medium slope
4 Moderately difficult Vertical parts with medium flow Simple rappel more than 30 m or with difficult access, climbing need a rope. Long time in water. medium current. Simple jump 5 to 8 m, difficult jump less than 5m. Wide siphon up to 1 m length or depth. Big slide or steep slope.
5 Difficult Vertical parts with medium to strong flow needing trajectory control. Several rappels in cliff, difficult climbing Long time in cold water. Medium current. Simple jump 8 to 10 m, difficult jump 5 to 8 m. Wide siphon up to 2 m length or depth.
6 Very difficult, exposed to danger Vertical parts with stong to very strong flow needing perfect trajectory control, difficult installation of rappel Long time in cold water. Strong current. Simple jump 10 to 14 m, difficult jump 8 to 10 m. Wide siphon up to 3 m length or depth. Difficult siphon up to 1m.
7 Extremely difficult, very exposed to danger Vertical parts with extremely strong flow needing perfect control of rope, trajectory and balance. Need breath control, low visibility Very strong current. Simple jump more than 14 m, difficult jump more than 10 m. Wide siphon more than 3 m length or depth. Difficult siphon more than 1m with current or without visibility.

Engagement Note
