Proposal
This tag would mark locations, normally buildings where the primary purpose is for children to play indoors. There is often a cafe and seating area for the parents.
There are a number of different types of indoor play. This proposal mainly concerned soft play areas which feature a main padded play areas for children and sometimes sensory areas. They are staffed and often include separate areas for different ages of children.
Other types of indoor play include inflatables ('bouncy castles') such as those of Jungle Bounce in the US.

To clarify which type of indoor play is offered, use indoor_play=* with an approrpiate value, such as indoor_play=soft_play.
Rationale
Currently there is no tag to mark this type of business. This tag would form the final destination. Users would search for this tag to find where these places are located, and be able to navigate to them.
Distinction from playground
Playground is the most similar, but playgrounds are normally unmanaged and outdoor. Indoor play centres are run as a business, with an entry fee and staff often also with a cafe for parents.
Usage
There are normally one or two of these soft play centres in each town / city / region in the UK. I don't know about other countries but I would imagine something very similar exists elsewhere too.
Area
This tag will generally be combined with the building=yes tag because most of these are standard buildings. I would imagine that they would normally be mapped by areas, due to their large nature.
Node
For the occasion when the indoor play centre forms only a small part of a larger building the tag could be applied to a node.
Representation
I imagine the representation will be similar to a playground or an adventure playground, but with a roof to represent the indoor nature of it.
Tagging
This tag would normally be used with building=yes because the nature of indoor play is that it is in a building.
Other tags that would be helpful with this would be standard ones relating to businesses and leisure centres. These would be:
Specific tags for indoor play centres that would be helpful are:
- padded_climbing_frame=yes/no - for indoor play centres that have a large padded climbing frame area.
- fee=yes/no/amount - for specifying if the indoor play centre charges a fee for access to the equipment.
- toddler_area=no/dedicated/shared - for indoor play centres that include areas specifically designed for smaller children.
- baby_area=no/dedicated/shared - for indoor play centres that include areas designed specifically for babies.
- sensory_area=yes/no - for indoor play centres that include a sensory area for children of all ages and abilities
Tags for individual pieces of equipment could follow the style used in the playground tag.
Current/interim
I have so far used this tag on a few of the indoor play centres around, I will make an effort to go and map more of them if people seem to like this idea. There doesn't seem to be any tag that it replaces, these centres seem to just not be mapped so far.

Due to the discussion on the tagging mailing list, this tag has been renamed to indoor play because 'Soft Play' is trademarked in the US. Indoor play also covers a broader range of areas, and sub tags could be used as qualifiers for the type of indoor play being described. Dominichosler (talk) 10:57, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

I agree with creating this as a separate entity to a playground. Although they may be a place where children play they are usually distinct from mearly a playground. They often have more facilities and a may include structured play zones. This may include role play (with dressing up and appropriate toys), soft play and toy play areas (play railways etc.). - Stewart Watkiss 11 February 2019
Absolutely support this. Practically speaking, someone looking for a playground - a place with often free entry, that you'd generally spend less time at, and that tends to not have more than a bench for the parents to lounge at - won't want an indoor play area where they'll likely spend upwards of an hour, pay for entry, and generally have something along the lines of a cafe to wait at, or vice versa.
