The place size criteria are cumbersome, when cities like Clarksville, Tenn., and Ventura, Calif., are in the same category as Chicago, Los Angeles or New York.

I would propose eight categories of places — six related to size, listed below, plus "suburb" to reflect neighborhoods or districts within cities, and "hamlet" to reflect areas with little or no population or services.

All cities are in category 1, unless they are the "anchor" community for a given metropolitan area as defined by the government, in which case, they fall into Category 2. This way, smaller cities that are the largest city in their respective area, such as Salt Lake City, Utah, which has a relatively small population but a large metropolitan area, is reflected as more significant on the map.

Present system is insufficient because it's difficult to tell relative significance of cities given wide range in village, town and city categories — a city of 9,900 people is hardly a village while a city of 11,000 shouldn't be reflected the same on a map as a city of 90,000.
