Introduction

This is an alpha-level (basic structure outlined, still has incomplete sections and errors) wiki for railroads, both freight and passenger, in South Carolina. Please bear with OSM as it continues to achieve completion; it is under construction.

Active Lines (Mainline, Branch or Industrial)

CSX Railroad (CSXT)

CSX Transportation, Incorporated, a Class I railroad, has major operating facilities in South Carolina in Charleston (Switching Yard, TRANSFLO Bulk Transfer Terminal, Intermodal Terminal), Columbia (Dixiana Automotive Distribution Center), Florence (Division Headquarters and Dispatch Center, Switching Yard), Greenville (TRANSFLO Bulk Transfer Terminals) and Spartanburg (TRANSFLO Bulk Transfer Terminal). CSX in South Carolina operates and maintains nearly 1,800 miles of track (1,269 route miles, 56% of the statewide rail system of 2,291 miles), more than 1,750 public and private grade crossings, handled more than 1 million carloads of freight and employed nearly 1,000 people (2015 figures). CSX carries a variety of commodities including automobiles, consumer products, food and agricultural products. Products shipped within South Carolina include aggregates, coal, containerized consumer goods, plastics and textile chemicals.

Norfolk Southern (NS)

The Norfolk Southern Railway, a Class I railroad, owns and operates a vast network of rail lines in the United States east of the Mississippi River. In addition to lines inherited from predecessor railroads (Norfolk & Western, Southern Railway), it acquired many lines as part of the 1998 split of the Conrail system. NS operates 679 route miles in South Carolina, 30% of South Carolina's rail system. Major commodities are chemicals, coal, lumber and wood products, pulp, paper and allied products and transportation equipment.

Hauling about 2000 carloads annually including biodiesel, ethanol, feed products, fertilizer, limestone, paper, plastics, and scrap metal. 13 route miles.

Others (CALA, LC, PDRR, PKHP, RRWX)

As each of these "other" Short Lines are a single line owned by a single railroad (except CALA), rather than entering them into single-row tables, they are grouped into one "Others" table. Note the distinction between the name of the owner and/or operator of the railroad (properly tagged with owner=* and/or operator=* on railway=rail ways) and the name of the line (properly tagged with name=* on railway=rail ways). These may be the same, or not: for example, the railroad may simply name the line "ABC Industrial Line," "Running Track" or similar, but to be strictly correct, owner and/or operator tags (both if different) AND name tags should be applied to the railway=rail ways. An additional tag of reporting_mark=* is neither documented nor "OSM approved" but it has been added to railway=rail ways (or a route=railway relation) in other parts of the US and so may be considered optional.

Military Rail

This section under construction.

Significant usage=military railway=rail exists at military sites, including Savannah River and NNPTC, however, there is only a small abandoned spur at Fort Jackson. Other sites (Charleston AFB, MCRD Parris Island, MCAS Beaufort...) have little or no rail. Try this Overpass Turbo (OT) query.

Passenger trains

Tracks, stations and platforms used for passenger trains are properly collected into route=train relations, or relations tagged route=light_rail, route=subway or route=tram when those are the underlying rail infrastructure.

The South Carolina Amtrak subset table below is considered complete. If you find Status which should be updated, please do so!

The South Carolina Department of Transportation's Multimodal Transportation Plan's Statewide Rail Plan states "There are currently no commuter rail services operating in the state." However, please see Proposed Rail section, below.

Amtrak operates intercity passenger trains in the contiguous United States: many intrastate and passenger=regional trains and all interstate (long_distance), passenger=national, highspeed=yes, service=night and passenger=international trains (some cross into Canada); see OSM Amtrak wiki table. Try OpenPublicTransportMap. A subset is repeated here with just these types of routes which serve South Carolina:

Railtrails and "Transitways"

A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example).

There might be entries in the Abandoned tables (above) which contain significant segments of railtrail (usually ped/bike). If so, it can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there (or both? e.g. PICK).

This table is incomplete, being somewhat complete along the coast, but missing possible railtrails further inland and upstate. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Proposed Rail, Rail Construction Projects

In addition to the Camp Hall Rail Project noted in the table (as it is "closer to completion" in its actual early planning phase), there is a proposal for High Speed Rail: Georgia DOT, in partnership with South Carolina DOT and North Carolina DOT, are leading development of a Tier I EIS for a high speed rail corridor between Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia that passes through the state’s Upstate region roughly parallel to I‐85. This Passenger Rail Corridor Investment Plan (PRCIP) is part of a larger high‐speed rail initiative on the behalf of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) that extends north to Washington, DC and is commonly referred to as the Southeast High Speed Rail (SEHSR) Corridor. Two of the alignments being evaluated in the Charlotte to Atlanta PRCIP study connect Charlotte with Columbia. One proposed alignment follows an existing CSX freight line, while the other is a Greenfield alignment roughly parallel to I‐77. Regardless of whether high‐speed rail service is found to be feasible, interest has been expressed in passenger rail service between Charlotte and Columbia that would connect to the expanding passenger rail network being developed in the Charlotte region. Until a real plan, route and map emerge and a funding source is identified, it is not appropriate to enter into OSM ways tagged railway=proposed. Ways tagged railway=construction are appropriate once construction begins.

Commuter rail or rail‐transit efforts have been investigated in five areas of the state, primarily in urban regions. As a result of the investigations, a proposal is being advanced in one urban region (Charleston) and two have selected Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) over commuter rail (Greenville and Rock Hill). Commuter rail corridors are not currently being considered in the other two urban areas (Columbia and Anderson).

In 2009, Greenville County Economic Development Corporation (GCEDC) initiated the Multimodal Transit Corridor Alternatives Feasibility Study focused on a 3.42‐mile section of inactive freight rail line extending from North Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville to just north of Mauldin. This line segment is owned by GCEDC. The study was completed in March 2010. Four transit alternatives were considered, including commuter rail, light rail transit (LRT), streetcar and BRT. The study envisioned a commuter rail option using existing tracks from Fountain Inn to eastern Greenville at Forester Road. The service then would continue on the rail corridor owned by GCEDC into Greenville. Of the four alternatives, BRT was ranked highest and was recommended.

The Berkeley‐Charleston‐Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) has conducted studies for commuter rail service on two routes in the Charleston Metropolitan Area. In October of 2008, financial assistance was requested from the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank to enable the planning and eventual construction of a commuter rail system connecting the suburban areas of Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner to the central business districts of North Charleston and Charleston, in two phases:
• Phase 1: Summerville – Charleston, predominantly on the NS corridor; and
• Phase 2: Moncks Corner – Goose Creek – Charleston, predominantly on the CSXT corridor.
This regional system envisioned connecting growing suburban communities with the urban centers of the Charleston region, providing an alternative mode of transportation for the area’s workforce and relieving congestion during the peak times on I‐26. It is the single remaining "likely to be realized" rail rapid transit system in South Carolina. However, since the last date describing this project was 2008, it is not entered into OSM nor the table below as an actual project until more recent data are available; updates are appreciated.

Name Relation Route Notes
Camp Hall Rail Project Relation not defined yet Berkeley County Palmetto Railways is planning for the development of a usage=industrial rail line to serve the Camp Hall Commerce Park (CHCP) in Berkeley County. The new rail line will connect CHCP to existing railroad right-of-way located near the Santee Cooper Cross Generating Station. The project team anticipates holding the next public meeting in late summer 2017, when more of the project study area may emerge towards an actual rail line route. Until that happens and a funding source is identified, it is not appropriate to enter into OSM ways tagged railway=proposed. Ways tagged railway=construction are appropriate once construction begins.

Yards

It would be very kind for more OSM volunteers to continue to build up this statewide "Yards" table (stub) with status on every single South Carolina rail yard. It is incomplete as there are many rail yards in the state.

Color semantics

About (status) colors in TIGER Review, Route, Name columns

Green means that the route's (TIGER) data highly approach or are fully OSM-reviewed. This strongly implies other relation attributes are correct, but this isn't always strictly true; see Notes/Status column. Green does not conflict with active public_transport:version=* v1-v2 growth. Go!

Yellow means "only partially reviewed" ; additional volunteer work is needed to enter or correct additional route data (railway and/or train) into OSM. Yellow may also mean a route has a volunteer entering data, yet route ambiguities persist about what is actually correct. TIGER review is an early priority (do first or now), and tiger_reviewed=no tag should be deleted now when true or superseded by newer, better data.

Red means "something" (often very little) is known about the route (or yard), so it is useful to put a row in the table about it as a placeholder, but it is early in creating a route relation: route data attributes are unknown or significantly missing/incomplete and need work.

About (branding) colors in Passenger Service columns

For route=train, route=subway, route=light_rail, route=tram web-displayed colors are intended to reflect real-world colors denoted by the transportation authority network, such as in printed, painted or otherwise visually branded materials directly associated with a particular route. For the Amtrak routes, a goal is towards more state/national agreement/completion. An initial example is that for Amtrak Cascades service in Washington state and Oregon, OSM's Amtrak wiki table and Mapzen's former transit-colours renderer (no longer functional) both display a closely matching shade of green, which in turn (by intention) better match livery of rolling stock found only on those tracks by that line and class of service. Similar early harmony among Amtrak and California/Railroads is underway, e.g. Capitol Corridor as orange, color of California poppy, the state flower and Pacific Surfliner as ocean blue. Color harmony, in motion.

About the colors and symbols in Amtrak® routes Status and Notes column

Color and symbol legend: status of each route is indicated by a symbol, which describes the type of feature, and a color, which indicates the completeness of that feature in OSM. For more details, see Wiki Help. Meaning of symbols:

Symbol Meaning
Routing Route status
Stops Stops status

"Bus stops" in this context (using "State Route Legend" syntax) means "Amtrak® stops." The visual symbols are concise, and while originally designed for bus stops, also work well for train routes.

Base Code NA 0 1 2 3 4 X
{{State Route|r=...|h=}} Routing - implies status unknown Routing (0/4) - no part of route added Routing (1/4) - route partly added (as relation) Routing (2/4) - route mainly added, needs completing Routing (3/4) - route relation complete (in view of 1 editor). Should be verified. Routing (4/4) - route complete & verified by second editor. Please date. Routing (X/4) - route does not exist in real world.
{{State Route|r=|h=...}} Stops - implies status unknown Stops (0/4) - no stops added to relation Stops (1/4) - some stops added Stops (2/4) - most stops added, needs completing Stops (3/4) - all stops added to relation (in view of 1 editor). Should be verified. Stops (4/4) - route complete & verified by second editor. Please date. Stops (X/4) - no stops in real world. Unlikely to be used without r=X as well.

The codes 0-4 are a logical progression, but they do not all have to be used in sequence. It is perfectly acceptable to go from 0 (nothing on map) to 3 (everything done in opinion of one editor). However, there should never be a jump to level 4. r=4 should only appear after r=3, and the same with h=3 & h=4, as this implies the relation has been checked by both the editor who completed it (level 3), and a second editor (level 4). Given these are different people, a jump up to level 4 from anything other than 3 is not possible.

In this wiki, this symbology is used as relations indicate where public_transport:version=1 is becoming version 2. The route_master column will eventually be fully populated with v2 relations as v1 routes upgrade to v2, the type=route_master column data acting as "entry point" into these Amtrak routes, the type=route column linking to "directional" child relations.
